Fans can get a closer look at Dwayne Johnson’s DC antihero in Total Film’s latest magazine issue, and have taken to social media to reveal a first look at some of the new Black Adam images.
While no images show the Justice Society, there are a number of different looks at The Rock as the antihero wizard — Zachary Levi’s Shazam counterpart. In the two new Black Adam images, the powerful wizard is wearing a dark, ragged cloak. Unlike Levi’s Shazam. The third image looks like it’s from a big battle scene. Lightning effects would likely be added to Johnson’s costume in post-production.
In the comics, Black Adam is a supervillain and is Shazam’s greatest enemy. He is Teth-Adam, an Egyptian slave that was granted powers of the wizard Shazam. Adam used the powers for revenge against his masters but also others who he thought deserved it. The wizard locked him up for centuries for abusing the powers of Shazam. In 2019’s Shazam! movie, there was a brief mention by the wizard who had a champion who misused his powers.
In the upcoming DC movie, just like Sony Pictures’ Venom and possibly Morbius, he is introduced as an antihero. The link between Black Adam and Shazam in the movies at this point seems unsubstantial and he was only slightly hinted in the first Shazam! movie.
There’s not a lot of details about the film though Johnson has given teasers like saying “the balance of power in the DC Universe is about to change,” or that “history is in the making” in regards to the film’s production. He admits that he would like to continue playing Black Adam after this film which seems to be pretty much a stand-alone movie. Perhaps we will see him joining the rest of the DCEU’s heroes and villains in crossover DC films.
Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam is set to be released on July 29, 2021.
