Morbius, a living vampire character from Marvel Comics, has a new trailer and it features Jared Leto going full vampire and attempting to be a superhero while being conflicted with his newly acquired gift and curse. The trailer reveals connections to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.
What seems to be more of a Venom spinoff, Morbius was known as a Spider-Man villain when he first appeared as an enemy of the web-slinger in The Amazing Spider-Man #101. Now, Leto’s Morbius is the next antihero for Marvel as he attempts to do right for the world, but all that power also makes him dangerous to humans.
Morbius follows Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist who acquires a form of vampire abilities giving him superhuman abilities when attempting to cure himself of a rare blood disease. In the Morbius trailer, we’re shown glimpses of his transformation. Jared Leto goes full vampire with super-strength, pointed ears, flight, and sharp teeth. He becomes a very complicated superhero with the craving that all vampires have—a thirst for human blood.
The latest Morbius trailer also reminds fans that the Marvel film is set inside the same universe as Sony’s other Spider-Man properties. Michael Keaton shows up reprising his role as Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming. Morbius himself even references Venom with a joke. This does confirm that these villains/antiheroes share some kind of Spider-Verse. They’ll share a connection to Tom Holland’s MCU Spider-Man.
The biggest mystery from the latest Morbius trailer is where exactly does this film fit into the rest of the Marvel movie universe. Perhaps, the movie being pushed to release after Spider-Man: No Way Home will result in Morbius making more sense in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Fans will have to wait and see when Morbius releases in theaters on January 28, 2022. For now, you can check out the Morbius trailer below.
