Moon Knight Episode 5 Spoilers Below
Marc then finds himself back in Arthur Harrow’s office, still being a doctor but in a slightly different office. Arthur attempts to reason with Marc and stress how he’s losing his mind. He tries to ground Marc by stating that he’s at a mental health facility in Chicago and his superhero belief is false.
Marc continually states that Arthur is not a doctor. Arthur chuckles and tries to agree with Marc. He then asks his patient to retrace his steps to see if Marc recalls how he ended up in this room today.
Marc tries to turn it around on Arthur by asking how he came to this building and Arthur answers the bus. Shifting the conversation back to Marc, Arthur talks about how Marc spoke about encountering a talking hippo. Arthur then asks Marc to confirm if that memory made sense or nonsense.
Marc instinctively answers that such a sight is nonsense and Arthur feels assured of progress in their sessions. Arthur brings up how easy it is to escape to fantasy with conflicting memories. In his talk, however, Marc poses the thought that perhaps the psych ward may be a fantasy and Arthur reluctantly agrees that could be a possibility.
Arthur focuses in on the hippo and finds such a character fascinating. He then brings up how Marc had previously mentioned a boy. Marc, however, is unwilling to play along past this point.
Marc thanks Arthur and stands up with a shard of glass, intending to attack the doctor. Arthur summons the guards who come into the room to restrain Marc. As Arthur urges the guards to be gentle, Marc is injected with a syringe.
Moon Knight episode 5 continues with Marc finding himself back where he was at the end of episode 4. He’s back in the hallway with a screaming Steven and the talking hippo. Marc then states that his meds are rather intense.
When the tension eases, the hippo starts asking if Marc and Steven are twins. When Steven agrees, the hippo says it’ll make her job easier. When Marc questions what is going on, the hippo brings up how Marc and Steven is dead.
Marc doesn’t believe it but Steven thinks he understands. The hippo then unfirls a scroll and prepares a speech on welcoming Marc and Steven into the Egyptian underworld, the Duat realm. Steven then recognizes the hippo as Taweret, goddess of women and children, the guide towards the afterlife.
While Steven is impressed, Marc finds himself in disbelief. Taweret then fiddles through her notes to inform them more about this realm. She states how the human mind can’t fully comprehend the Duat and that it may draw from associations of their own reality.
Taweret mentions that the psych ward is a first for her and Steven questions why they’d envision a psych ward. Marc sighs knowing the answer: That they’re insane. A bitter Marc finds himself making sense of all the nonsense.
Marc then brings up to Steven briefly that he spoke with Doctor Harrow. Before Steven can question this vision, Marc bursts open the doors to another psych ward, expecting more of the same. Instead, he opens the doors to a sand dune of the underworld on a giant ship.
Marc is shaken, realizing he’s not crazy and that he’s in the underworld. Steven then informs him that they’ll now be sailing to A’aru, the field of Reeds. Taweret confirms this.
She informs them that if their hearts are balanced then they will spend eternity in paradise. Before proceeding, however, she pulls out the hearts of Marc and Steven. Taweret is impressed that it actually worked this time without making their chests explode.
She then weighs their hearts on the scales of truth. Steven informs Marc that this will determine if they’re worthy of the journey. If they’re not worthy, they’ll be thrown off the ship and forzen in sand forever with the dead.
As Taweret weighs their hearts, Marc whispers to Steven that they’re not going to the sands or A’aru. He brings up how they need to escape the afterlife and get back to reality. The only plan Marc comes up with is that they need to kill the hippo if she presents a problem.
Taweret calls the two of them over and notices the scales continually go up and down. She notes that the hearts seem incomplete and thus a final decision can’t be rendered. Seeking an alternative, Taweret brings up how her boat contains all their memories and that the two must reveal their truths to each other to have fuller hearts.
Steven Learns About Marc’s Past in Moon Knight Episode 5
Moon Knight episode 5 now shows Marc and Steven returning to the psych ward setting, aiming to be more open. A concerned Steven briefly asks if Layla is okay and Marc says she’ll be fine for now. While noting Layla’s great leadership, Marc brings up how it’d be easy to overpower Taweret, a prospect that Steven disagrees with.
Steven happens upon a door with a window, where the version of Marc as Moon Knight killed a jackal in the museum. They note how their minds are a mess of memories. They then find the time they turned back the stars.
Steven then arrives at a door revealing a city street. They both hear the sound of a boy crying. They explore the ward for where it came from and stumble onto a cafeteria with dead bodies at the tables, which Steven figures is a memory of Marc’s.
At each table with corpses sitting are artifacts. Marc notes a scale at one of the tables measuring their hearts. Steven asks if Marc really killed all these people and Marc brings up how these murders were instructed by Khonshu, an act of punishing the wicked.
Steven asks if he remembers each person and Marc says he does. Steven then notes how the scales are slowing down. Before they can think of what to do next, Steven notices a child in the room. He then follows the boy out of the room but Marc tells him to not follow.
Steven follows the boy into a city backyard with the store closing behind him. Marc cannot enter this room and begs for Steven to open the door. In this room, Steven finds his mother and notes that a childlike Marc has a brother.
Steven then notes that Marc’s brother pretends to be someone called Doctor Grant. He then notices the bones of a bird similar to Khonshu. Steven follows the brothers into a cave and tries to tell the boys to go no further.
Steven finds out about a terrible truth in Moon Knight episode 5. As Marc struggles to find a way into that memory from the psych ward, Steven starts growing fearful of what he’s about to discover. As Steven tries fruitlessly to save the boys, Marc starts repeating to himself that it’s just a memory. As he says this, Marc discovers another room, inside a house during a Jewish funeral for Marc’s brother.
In this room, Marc finds Steven. They both watch as the young Marc is punished by his mother for not keeping his brother safe. The young Marc flees as Steven pursues, against Marc’s wishes.
The path up the stairs then leads to another memory where young Marc celebrates his birthday without his mother. Steven then ascends further to another birthday for young Marc. While Marc’s father serves up cake, Marc’s drunk mother enters the room to further scorn her son for his brother’s death.
As young Marc bitterly leaves the room, Steven follows again. This time he doesn’t open the door as Marc pulls him away. Steven tries to enter the room but Marc holds him back from discovering the truth.
But it’s too late. The memory is already revealing of when a grownup Marc leaves home, despite the pleas of his father to fix their family. Marc, angry about such memories, tackles Steven into another memory.
The two of them end up in a memory of Egypt when Marc was a mercenary. Steven then recalls how Layla told him that Marc killed hostages. Marc then explains what went down with an operation to enter a tomb that went awry despite Marc’s attempts to avoid violence.
Steven asks what happened to Marc during this event and he doesn’t answer. They approach the tomb and enter inside to find a dying Marc at the feet of Khonshu. Before Marc attempts to kill himself by shooting himself in the face, Khonshu speaks to him.
Khonshu speaks of noting Marc’s pain and introduces himself. He tells Marc that he’s in need of a warrior to be his final word against evil. Khonshu asks if Marc wants life or death and he’s unsure.
Khonshu’s words of Marc being a worthy warrior comes up. He establishes the deal of vengence and Steven notes how this was a manipulation. Marc then agrees to Khonshu’s deal.
The scales appear and start balancing again. The Marc of the past arises as Moon Knight, dressed in the superhero attire. When Steven questions what’s going on, they are called out of the memories and back onto Taweret’s ship.
Taweret informs them that there’s trouble in the underworld as souls are condemned before their time. Steven notes that this is the work of Harrow and Marc stresses to Taweret that they need to get back to the world of the living to stop him. Taweret says she can’t do that as Marc’s body can’t heal in that world.
Steven then asks if Khonshu can be freed to give him back his power. Taweret is unsure about this, asking if Steven and Marc really want to be with Khonshu again. The two agree, recognizing they have no choice when so many souls are in danger of unjust punishment.
Taweret agrees to help and steers her ship towards the gates of Osiris. Taweret warns Marc and Steven to stay inside while she makes the journey. She brings up how the scales still need to be balanced.
Moon Knight episode 5 is now back in the psych ward of memories, Marc stresses that they can talk rather than go through all the memories. Marc begs Steven not to relive everything he has experienced. Steven, however, says that they can’t afford to shut out all the memories again.
As Marc beats himself up in anger for having to relive his past, he’s torn out of his own mind, again back in the office of Doctor Harrow. Marc asks if Arthur injected something into his neck. Arthur laughs, saying that he can’t involunarily restrain him in such a way and that Marc watches too many movies.
Arthur brings up how proud he is of Marc’s progress in reliving painful memories. As Marc looks into a glass of water he is handed, Arthur questions whether Marc created Steven or if Steven created Marc. Arthur says the only way to know for sure is if Marc opens up to Steven.
Back in the memories, Marc and Steven both explore the room of young Marc in his room. He hears a banging on the door and tells himself that it’s not his mom. His mother angrily bangs on the door and shouts for him to open it up.
The young Marc then changes his voice to that of an English boy and has become Steven. Marc and Steven both learn the truth about Steven’s identity. Steven is a made-up person that Marc created as a split personality for a coping mechanism.
Marc then leads Steven out of the room, stressing how he didn’t want him to see that. Steven attacks Marc, realizing his existence was little more than a stress ball. Marc fires back by stating how Steven got to have the kind of life he never had.
Marc bitterly says learning the truth like this brings no comfort to anybody. He then brings up how Steven’s life was a lie for more than just his creation. Marc reveals that their mother wasn’t alive and that he was unable to attend the funeral.
Steven then angrily repeats that he wants to be let out of this world and these memories. He awakens in Harrow’s office and instinctively splashes the doctor with the cup of water, frightened at where he is now. Steven apologizes but then recognizes where he is.
Arthur tries to stress he’s a doctor but Steven isn’t buying it. Steven comments on Arthur’s appearance, noting how he looks like Ned Flanders. Arthur then brings up how he’d been hoping to speak with Steven about Marc.
Arthur then brings up how Steven and Marc came to him after his mother passed. Steven grows angry, stating his mother is alive. Arthur tries to calm him down by offering to call her, against Steven’s wishes.
Steven then reaches someone and tells Steven that he can speak to his mother. Steven, fearfully, takes the phone. He then admits that she’s dead, noting the dial tone on the phone.
The bitter memories then surface of Marc standing outside his mother’s apartment on her shiva. His father watches him as Marc drinks from across the street. He then leaves, unwilling to face his family and breaking down into tears as he walks away.
Marc watches this memory and then arrives at the moment where his past self zaps back into becoming Steven. Steven finds himself lost and calling his mother cheerfully, trying to find his way back home. Both Marc and Steven watch this moment.
Steven tries to tell Marc it wasn’t his fault and comfort him. As they come to understand one another, they feel a quake in the ground. The ship has arrived at the gates of Osiris.
Taweret informs them that the gate looks off. Even worse, the scales are still not balanced and their journey is at an end. The undead souls then arise on the boat to claim the souls of Marc and Steven.
Marc and Steven fight the undead that attack them. Marc is nearly dragged into the sand but Steven intervenes by stearing the ship. Steven then beats down on the dead souls with a stick, noting how he prefers cricket.
Another soul nearly drags down Marc but Steven tackles the undead soul off the boat. Marc calls out to Steven but it’s too late. Steven is consumed by the sand, trapped forever with the dead.
Marc’s pleas to stop the boat leads to the scales being balanced. He is then immeditely transported to the field of reeds, the paradise promised to the worthy. Now in his final resting place, Marc finds himself at a loss of what to do next.
