Yet, if we’re healthy, working, and able to spend time with loved ones (virtually), then we have lots to be thankful for. Though there are a lot of cancellations and doing our best to stay home, for us “con” fans, 2020 is the year of virtual pop-culture events and comic conventions.
Most of the cancelled pop-culture events and comic conventions have left a lot of us disappointed. Like SXSW 2020, Emerald City Comic-Con, and WonderCon in Anaheim, CA. Following that was the San Diego Comic-Con, which was a huge one. And now New York Comic-Con.
Fortunately, fans were still able to get news about their favorite tv shows and upcoming movies with these events shifting to virtual formats. In-person gatherings might have been cancelled, but that didn’t stop casts, directors, and producers sharing news during virtual panels.
San Diego Comic-Con@Home
The year of virtual pop-culture events and comic conventions started with the San Diego Comic-Con. They held their Comic-Con@Home offering virtual guests panels for everyone to see. For free! And all content is still available. For the first time in 50 years, the in-person event was cancelled.
Reedpop Metaverse
New York Comic-Con organizers, built a virtual convention experience called Metaverse. Reedpop (the convention organizer which runs New York Comic-Con, Emerald City Comic Con, C2E2, and more) created this virtual “realm” that brings together pop-culture and fandom to your home.
You can go to www.findthemetaverse.com, which gives information on the site’s mission, an offer to subscribe to the Metaverse newsletter for discounted merchandise, and a form that will tailor the site to the specific fandoms.

Building your geek home away from home is the reason we get out of bed in the morning,” continues the description from the Metaverse website. “Since we can’t do that in-person this summer, we’ve worked hard to create a space to bring the fun of our events to you digitally. Throughout the coming months, we’ll be adding new features to bring the experiences you love to the comfort of your home screen.” – Reedpop
NYCC Metaverse, October 8-11
With the recent announcement of New York Comic-Con 2020 physical event at the Javits Center in October not being able to run as intended, the show does go on with a virtual event. The NYCC Metaverse on October 8-11, the new online portal, will be bring the pop-culture virtual experience to you. DC FanDome, August 22
Warner Bros. and DC are pulling all the stops with this virtual event. DC FanDome virtual experience is coming August 22, 2020 starting at 10 a.m. PDT. The free, 24-hour event offers fans from everywhere everything DC! From DC Comics news to DC movies and TV shows. It’ll feature the stars, filmmakers, and creators behind the biggest films, tv shows, games, and comics. And it’s just been recently reported that the event is now being split into two days. September 12 will be the next day. Check out the teaser trailer and guest list below.
