The Walking Dead cast, who by now are more like family, reunited at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. During the flagship show’s final Hall H panel last Friday, AMC announced Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira would return to the TWD Universe in their own show which will reunite Rick Grimes and Michonne. The Walking Dead stars both addressed the crowd.
“We missed you and we owe you the conclusion of this story of Rick and Michonne,” Gurira said. “I can’t wait to get my cowboy boots back on and get the band back together,” added Lincoln.
After the panel, some of the cast mates reunited including Lincoln and Daryl Dixon actor Norman Reedus who also will be leading his own spinoff show next year on AMC. The Walking Dead stars took pictures together.
“It was great. We knew they were coming,” Reedus told EW of Lincoln and Gurira’s surprise appearance at SDCC. “[Lincoln]’s in the room right next to mine, so I had a chat with him all night before that. It’s great seeing them.”
Andrew Lincoln left The Walking Dead after five episodes during season 9 in 2018. He was announced to star in a Rick Grimes movie trilogy but that has now been replaced with the Rick Grimes and Michonne spinoff. In a Walking Dead Season 10 episode, Gurira’s Michonne would leave to find Rick and bring him home.
“Danai, I was sitting on my patio and I get a text and she’s like, ‘Is that you sitting in the dark up there in a bathrobe?'” Reedus told EW. “And I’m like looking like, where are you? That goes on for 20 minutes, and then she walked up and screamed. So it was good to see Danai.”
It remains unknown if Rick and Michonne will make their way back to the survivors of the zombie apocalypse but Norman Reedus, who was supposed to co-star with Melissa McBride in their own show, hinted there could be some reunions down the road in the expanding TWD Universe. McBride decided to drop out of the Daryl spinoff.
During an interview with Iron & Air, Reedus teased, “I’ll be going to Europe doing a mission. Some of our characters are lost, and maybe I’ll run into one or two of them.”
Fans will see Rick and Michonne together again for the first time since 2018 in their untitled series which will start with a six-episode first season premiering sometime in 2023. Reedus’ Daryl series and Isle of the Dead starring Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan are also scheduled to premiere in 2023 on AMC and AMC+.
It will be nice to see The Walking Dead stars reunite is some form of crossover or even a full-length feature film someday. For now, you can see them in the photos they took at SDCC. You can also watch The Walking Dead Final Season Part 3 trailer below.
