Marvel Studios just released the trailer for its next project, Secret Invasion. The Disney+ series will see the return of past MCU characters from previous films such as Nick Fury, Maria Hill, and Talos from Captain Marvel. The last time we saw Nick Fury was on a space station along with Skrulls during a post-credit scene Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion takes its name from Marvel Comics crossover event that had many of Earth’s heroes replaced by the shape-shifting Skrulls. Although in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Skrulls are not portrayed as villains like they were in the comics.
Secret Invasion will feature Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. Fury will come back for one last mission. He will reunite will long-time S.H.I.E.L.D. partner, Maria Hill. Hill will once again be played by Cobie Smulders. Ben Mendelsohn will reprise his role as the Skrull, Talos.
The Marvel show will also include Academy Award-winner Olivia Colman and Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke. Though Clarke is just joining now, her character reportedly has been in the MCU before as a Skrull child in Captain Marvel. She will be playing G’iah, Talos’ daughter, but all grown up. Clarke describes her as a “refugee child” with a “punk feeling.”
It has also been reported that Martin Freeman’s Everett Ross, who fans last saw on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, will be in the show as well as Don Cheadle’s Rhodey. Rhodes will not be War Machine in Secret Invasion, but serving as the president’s right-hand man. This might hint at a set up for his upcoming Armor Wars series. Though this Rhodes could be a Skrull.
Already being compared to shows like Homeland and The Americans, Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion feels like a spy-based Skrull hunt. Based on the trailer, it already looks a lot more “grounded” than previous Disney+ Marvel shows.
Marvel Studios’ Secret Invasion starts streaming June 21, 2023 on Disney+. You can watch the trailer below.
