Marvel Studios released a new teaser trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine and surprised fans with the return of one of the iconic X-Men villains—Sabretooth.
The one minute teaser was enough to get fans even more excited for Deadpool & Wolverine. It featured a first look at the return of Sabretooth. Tyler Mane returns to play the character he brought to live-action in the first X-Men film from 2000. Now, he joins the MCU. Ryan Reynolds posted on social media and joked, “don’t think we can add another ‘and’ to the title.” The fight between Wolverine and Sabretooth looks like it’ll tale place in the wasteland set that has been shown multiple times in previous trailers.
The new Deadpool & Wolverine trailer opens with a grizzled Wolverine, played by the returning Hugh Jackman, sporting a rather undignified situation. Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds, cheerfully yanks an assortment of weaponry – presumably lodged during a previous skirmish – from Logan’s rapidly regenerating body. This comedic moment underscores the film’s core dynamic: the frenemy tension between the two mutants.
“People have waited decades for this fight,” cracks Deadpool, a clear reference to the long-awaited rematch between Wolverine and his feral half-brother. Fans have been clamoring for a proper showdown ever since the underwhelming portrayal of Sabretooth, played by Liev Schreiber, in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
The teaser trailer ends with Wolverine and Sabretooth running towards each other hinting at a brutal battle reminiscent of their comic book brawls. Whether Sabretooth is the main antagonist or part of a larger threat remains to be seen.
One thing’s for certain: Sabretooth’s return injects a hefty dose of nostalgia for fans of the early X-Men films. With Jackman and Reynolds at the helm, Deadpool & Wolverine promises a bloody, hilarious brawl decades in the making.
In the comics, Sabretooth is Wolverine’s arch-nemesis who also has the mutant gene that carries a healing factor and claws. At one point, fans believed Sabretooth was Logan’s father which is what co-creator Chris Claremont initially intended according to interviews after he finished writing X-Men, but never really made it official during his run. Sabretooth made his first appearance in Iron Fist #14 in 1977. Then became synonymous to Wolverine and the X-Men in the mid-1980s.
The superhero buddy film opens in theaters Friday, July 26. The same week as San Diego Comic-Con, which recently announced that Marvel Studios will make their return to the legendary Hall H. You can watch the new Deadpool & Wolverine teaser trailer featuring Tyler Mane’s Sabretooth below.
