After years of fans campaigning to release the Snyder Cut of Justice League, director Zack Snyder’s DC superhero team-up movie finally arrived last Thursday morning. The 4-hour director’s cut premiered on HBO Max and was received with better reviews than the 2017 release. Remember, this cut isn’t your usual director’s cut where deleted scenes are added back to the theatrical release version. Zack Snyder’s Justice League adds 2 more hours to the runtime with reshoots and new story arcs for some of its characters like Ray Fisher’s Cyborg, Steppenwolf’s motives, and Ezra Miller’s Flash heroics. After an additional $70 million budget and Snyder choosing full creative control over a paycheck, Zack Snyder’s Justice League was met with applause from fans and critics. Now Snyder is hoping he’ll get a chance to do a Justice League sequel.
Snyder spoke to Entertainment Weekly and admitted he never thought Warner Bros. would welcome him back to finish his vision he initially set out to make nearly 5 years ago. Because of the new success Zack Snyder’s Justice League is having, the director is still holding on hope that the studio will bring him back to do Justice League 2.
“I always go, what is more likely?” the filmmaker tells the magazine. “That Warner Bros. would ask me to make a sequel to Justice League? Or that they would resurrect a three-year-old movie, spend millions of dollars to restore it to my original [vision], and then release it? I think that the sequel would have been a more likely scenario than what’s just happened. So, I guess in the face of that I say, ‘Who knows what the future holds?'”
Snyder revealed this week what his plans would be for a Justice League sequel. It would follow-up the Nightmare sequence where Superman (Henry Cavill) falls to Darkseid’s Anti-Life equation.
“It’s the fall of Earth, when Superman succumbs to anti-life,” Snyder explained to the New York Times. “And then sending Flash back in time to change one element so that doesn’t happen. And then the big battle where we beat him. When [the villain] Darkseid comes to Earth, in the movie that you’ll never see, the armies of Earth all unite again, as they did before.”
Snyder added, “This time there would be aircraft carriers and Special Forces guys, all the armies of the world would come together, as well as [Aquaman’s fellow] Atlanteans rising out of the ocean and the Themyscirans [Wonder Woman’s compatriots] coming off their island. That was our big finale. But it’s a long drum roll and guitar solo to get there.”
With the improved version, fans are now starting a “restore the Snyderverse” campaign. Hopefully, Snyder gets that chance.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, and Amy Adams as Lois Lane. The DCEU film is now streaming on HBO Max.
