The Marvel Universe will unveil its latest TV offering in December when WandaVision comes to Disney+ in a special limited six-hour series.
Created by Jac Schaeffer, the streaming show is based on the Marvel Comics characters Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) and is one of the studio’s first live-action stories set after the events of Avengers: Endgame.
In the show, Wanda and an apparently alive Vision move to Westview, a small town where the pair attempt to hide their powers in order to live as a “normal” married couple. However, it’s clear to audiences that this town may not be what they envisioned.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the show is attempting to be something of a love letter to TV’s Golden Age, as Schaeffer and Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige talked to the magazine about taking cues from classic sitcoms such as I Dream of Jeannie and Bewitched to create the show’s style.
“We’re paying tribute and honoring all of these incredible shows and people who came before us, [but] we’re also trying to blaze new territory,” Schaeffer said.
At a time when the world is something of a mess, Feige said a show like WandaVision attempts to present a great piece of escapism, like the shows of yesteryear.
“I would get ready for the day and watch some old sitcom because I couldn’t take the news anymore,” Feige said, talking about his experiencing with watching fun TV. “Getting ready to go to set over the last few years, I kept thinking of how influential these programs were on our society and on myself, and how certainly I was using it as an escape from reality where things could be tied up in a nice bow in 30 minutes.”
To accomplish that same feel, WandaVision’s debut episode was filmed in front of a live studio audience, but it won’t stay that way. The show evolves over the course of its six hours into what the TV medium is like today. WandaVision will be released sometime this winter on Disney+.
