The Whisperers may once again walk among the undead in The Walking Dead’s fifth episode of the final season. In TWD’s season 10, the survivors silenced the Whisperers when Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) killed their leader Alpha (Samantha Morton) and Daryl (Norman Reedus) took down Beta (Ryan Hurst) resulting in the end of the Whisperer War. Though winning the war, the survivors had big losses. Siddiq (Avi Nash) was killed and the burning of the Hilltop Colony, which was once home to Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and her son. The Whisperers torched Hilltop in The Walking Dead season 10 episodes “Morning Star” and “Walk With Us.”
The Walking Dead’s Whisperers Return
In the trailer for The Walking Dead Season 11 Episode 5, “Out of the Ashes,” Carol (Melissa McBride), Aaron (Ross Marquand), Jerry (Cooper Andrews), and ex-Whisperer Lydia (Cassady McClincy) discover a Whisperer mask when they returned to Hilltop. The official TWD episode synopsis says, “Alexandrians encounter Hilltop squatters; Eugene’s group undergoes orientation at the Commonwealth.”
Despite the deaths of Alpha, Beta, and winning the Whisperer War in season 10, the survivors are still suffering from its aftermath in The Walking Dead Final Season. When Beta unleashed a horde of walkers into Alexandria, it left the community in dire straits prompting Maggie and crew to take on a mission to Meridian for supplies. That mission has taken a detour and resulted in a dangerous confrontation against the new enemy — The Reapers.
“I think it’s an exploration of a different human darkness,” Callan McAuliffe, who plays Alden, told Distractify about the differences between the Whisperers and the Reapers. “I think that’s always been one of the themes of the show. In The Whisperers, we saw something like a return to Animalia, and now we’re seeing more consciousness in the darkness, which to me is more scary.”
