Top Gun: Maverick officially becomes the seventh highest-grossing film of all time in the domestic box office surpassing 1997’s Titanic directed by James Cameron.

The Tom Cruise movie earned $1.9 million on Friday as the Top Gun sequel played in its eleventh weekend in theaters. Originally released on May 27, Top Gun: Maverick, which is expected to take in $6.7 million for the weekend, will now have earned $662 million domestically. James Cameron’s Titanic brought in a total of $659 million domestically. Titanic was also the highest-grossing film of all time at one point.

Top Gun: Maverick isn’t too far from the current sixth highest-grossing film domestically. Avengers: Infinity War is sitting at $678 million. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens currently sits on top for highest-grossing movie of all time domestically at $936 million.

The Cruise hit movie is also performing well internationally. Top Gun: Maverick grossed $690 million internationally helping it cross the billion dollar mark. That’s without China and Russia. The Top Gun sequel’s current total box office haul is $1.3 billion. Cruise’s highly praised film is also crushing it with the critics. Its Rotten Tomatoes score is currently 97% with critics and 99% with audiences. It also received a standing ovation at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Here’s what we thought about Top Gun: Maverick overall: “The sequel to Top Gun flies higher than the previous film with way more to explore and greater excitement to be had. Cruise still makes for a strong action star, Teller delivers his finest performance in some time, and the jet sequences alone are worth the price of admission. It’s as much a treat for the eyes as it is a compelling NAVY drama.”

Top Gun: Maverick is now Paramount Pictures’ highest-grossing domestic release of all time. That position belonged to Titanic until this weekend. Though Cruise’s film holds the seventh spot at the moment, Titanic is set to re-release in theaters next year.
