According to TWD Universe chief content officer and executive producer Scott Gimple, The Walking Dead series will return with a premiere that does something “we have never seen” on the show before. The premiere, scripted by showrunner Angela Kang, will be split into 2 parts kicking off the super-sized eleventh and final season of TWD. The 24-episode season, which is the zombie show’s biggest ever, promises to be brutal and extra dark for the group of survivors who are now living in one community.
The Walking Dead Will Return To It’s Larger Scope and Scale
After The Walking Dead’s extended season 10 bonus episodes, which were pared-down due to filming during the pandemic, the producers say TWD is back to the scope and scale of pre-pandemic seasons. “The first episode is crazy. I cannot wait for people to see it,” Gimple teased during an appearance on TWDUniverse on Twitch. “It’s big. It’s very, very big. I don’t want to say too much, but it’s stuff we have never seen on the show. When Angela, the writer, started talking about it, I immediately got excited.”
The former Walking Dead showrunner continued to say, “It’s something we have not yet seen on the show. After the amount of episodes we’ve done” — 153 episodes so far — “that’s a pretty cool thing.”
After the Whisperer war and ending the feud with Alpha (Samantha Morton) and Beta (Ryan Hurst), the survivors will be in a state of rebuilding in TWD’s season 11. Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan) returned home to Virginia after years of being away and now must learn to live inside the same walls as Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) — the killer of her husband.
Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) must move forward with an Alexandria that’s at the verge of collapsing. The survivors’ world will once again get bigger in The Walking Dead season 11 when Eugene’s (Josh McDermitt) expedition leads right into the Commonwealth — a post-apocalyptic civilization unlike any other on The Walking Dead series.
The Walking Dead season 11 is expected to be broken up into three eight-episode blocks, which will conclude sometime in 2022. Scott Gimple previously revealed this final chapter begins with “eight action-packed episodes that will feature the massive scope and scale fans have come to expect from TWD Universe.”
“Coming off of the six additional episodes for season 10, which focused on smaller, character-driven stories, we’re excited to kick off Season 11 bigger than ever,” said Kang when announcing the August 22 season premiere. “The stakes will be high — we’ll see more zombies, tons of action, intriguing new stories, never-before-seen locations and our groups together in one community for the first time, trying to rebuild what the Whisperers took from them.”
