In a new behind-the-scenes look at the final season of The Walking Dead shows Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) in the same dark underground setting, which may hint at them having to work together for some reason.
Being away for quite some time, Maggie missed a lot about Negan’s time in Alexandria. Carol (Melissa McBride) commuted his imprisonment to assassinate Alpha (Samantha Morton) and helped end the war with the Whisperers in TWD’s season 10. In the extended season 10 bonus episode “Home Sweet Home”, while on the run from the Reapers and the Whisperers burning down her home at the Hilltop colony, Maggie returned to Alexandria. Her homecoming was spoiled by Negan when she saw him still alive and out of prison. Maggie will now have to learn to live and raise her child, Hershel Rhee (Kien Michael Spiller), in the same community as her husband’s killer.
The new in-production video for The Walking Dead’s season 11 reveals a dark glimpse at the season premiere, where it looks like Maggie, Negan and Daryl (and Dog) make their way underground. The Walking Dead previously revealed this setting in a first look photo. See it below. The TWD premiere is reported to be 2-parts that will jumpstart the massive 24-episode final season of the zombie show.
It’s probably safe to say that there will be a lot of awkward moments and friction between Maggie and Glenn’s killer. Executive producer and Walking Dead Universe chief content officer Scott Gimple said Maggie’s story won’t be defined by her personal vendetta against Negan in the eleventh and final season.
“It certainly isn’t just about that Maggie vs. Negan. She isn’t defined by that,” Gimple said recently on Twitch’s TWDUniverse. “It is some pretty crucial business, obviously the end of the episode ‘Here’s Negan’ seems to tell us that it’s nothing to sneeze at.”
“She was out there doing pretty incredible things,” Gimple continued about Maggie’s time away from our group of survivors. “She went from someone who was listening to her dad obviously and wasn’t sure walkers were sick or whether they were dead, to someone who very quickly became the leader of a community and stabilized them and led them through some very difficult stuff. She wore that in a way that seemed like she was born for it. That’s a huge part of her story. Even motherhood, I wouldn’t say would define her.”
Maggie’s role as a post-apocalyptic leader is the center of her story TWD’s final season, Gimple mentioned and Negan acting as an “unbelievable complication to that” after leaving his past in his origin story “Here’s Negan.”
