The Walking Dead: Dead City teaser trailer has arrived online and while it says the TWD spin-off is “coming soon,” it’s been reported that the show is expected to premiere sometime in June 2023. The short promo also confirms the reason for Maggie’s new adventure in The Walking Dead Universe.
The Walking Dead: Dead City centers on Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Cohan’s Maggie was introduced in the second season of the flagship show while Negan made his grand entrance in season six’s finale. Dead City will see Maggie and Negan traveling to a post-apocalyptic Manhattan that’s been cut off from the mainland. It has become a crumbling city filled with the dead and denizens who have made New York City their own world of anarchy, danger, beauty and terror. With The Walking Dead: Dead City teaser, we now see why Maggie must join Negan on this journey.
In a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cohan revealed Dead City will pick up “a few years” after the conclusion of The Walking Dead.
“We end up picking up in New York at the bottom of a really unexpected mountain,” Cohan said “where maybe things have gone well for a period of time, but we’re back at this challenge, just like these challenges that always seem to keep cropping up.”
“Nothing is through rose-colored glasses,” Cohan added. “Because the thing that comes up, it’s like, okay, so we overcame this obstacle of the Commonwealth and these things, that doesn’t mean life is easy just because you quashed one enemy. And the enemy is this moving target. It’s also the enemy within.”
Joining Cohan and Morgan in The Walking Dead: Dead City cast include Mahina Napoleon (NCIS: Hawai’i), Zeljko Ivanek (Madam Secretary) and Jonathan Higginbotham (Shining Vale). Details on their characters haven’t been revealed. Gaius Charles of Friday Night Lights is also joining the Dead City cast as Izaak, who is “confident, ruthless and unyielding in the pursuit of what he believes is justice with the force of his will and his menace. Izaak enjoys his work and intersperses humor with the terror he incites. This is a family man, devoted to building a safe world for his wife and daughters. His journey unearths a loss he is haunted by. He has patience and resilience and walks rather than runs from his mistakes.”
Eli Jorné, a writer and co-executive producer of The Walking Dead will serve as showrunner on Dead City. Cohan, Morgan, Jorné and chief content officer Scott M. Gimple will all be serving as executive producers for the series.
Other TWD spinoffs in the works include The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon featuring Norman Reedus’s Daryl going on an overseas mission and The Walking Dead: Summit series which will see Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes and Danai Gurira’s Michonne hopefully reuniting.
