The Walking Dead is coming to a close in October but AMC Networks has confirmed plenty of spinoffs from TWD Universe including a Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) series.
Morgan and Cohan are set to reprise their roles in the show that was initially announced as Isle of the Dead. Apparently, that was just the working title. According to Entertainment Weekly, the spinoff series will now officially be known as The Walking Dead: Dead City.
The Walking Dead: Dead City started filming in New Jersey this summer and is expected to premiere sometime in 2023. The series is written by Eli Jorné and will serve as showrunner. Jorné has written for the flagship series as well. Morgan, Cohan and The Walking Dead Universe chief content officer Scott M. Gimple will serve as executive producers.
The Walking Dead’s Negan and Maggie spinoff will see the frenemies travel to Manhattan that’s been cut off from the mainland early after the outbreak. The government destroyed all of the bridges and tunnels leading to the island that’s been overrun by thousands of walkers. How the pair will get on the cutoff island is still up in the air.
There hasn’t been any further details on what exactly requires Negan and Maggie to team up and travel together. The two characters have been at each other’s throats for the majority of The Walking Dead’s eleventh and final season because of their history. Perhaps something so significant will happen that forces them head out on a mission to Manhattan together.
The Walking Dead showrunners have said that the last eight episodes of season 11 will not set up any of the upcoming spinoff shows. They stated the purpose of the final 8 episodes is to close the chapters on some stories while leaving others open-ended.
As for Jeffrey Dean Morgan, he’ll be a busy man filming for both The Walking Dead: Dead City and Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys which will reunite him with Supernatural star Jensen Ackles.
The Walking Dead: Dead City cast also includes Gaius Charles, Mahina Napoleon, Željko Ivanek, Jonathan Higginbotham, Karina Ortiz, Caleb Reese Paul, Charlie Solis, Aixa Kendrick, Eleanor Reissa and Trey Santiago-Hudson. Maybe fans may get a few surprises from previous TWD cast members.
The Walking Dead: Dead City is set to premiere in 2023. The Walking Dead season 11’s final 8 episodes start October 2, 2022 on AMC and AMC+. Check out the Dead City title announcement below.
