The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Events Have Been Planned Out For A Long Time Says Director James Gunn

When Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame blew everyone away in theaters, the Infinity Saga came to a close. However, there were still questions that needed answering. One of those questions included what was in store for the Guardians of the Galaxy.

On May 3, 2021, Marvel Studios released a teaser video updating us on the upcoming movies. After learning the long-awaited Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3 was to be released on May 5, 2023, fans took to Twitter and unloaded a ton of questions on director and writer, James Gunn. He then told us “the Guardians’ path has been set for a long time.”

In 2014, we got to meet The Guardians of the Galaxy. In 2017, we continued to learn more about their story in Vol 2. We then got to see some Guardians action in both Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). After the events of the “Infinity Saga”, we were unsure what happened to 2012-Gamora. Will Peter Quill find her? Is Thor going to join the Guardians?

Now, it seems like we have answers on the horizon. While the release of Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3 isn’t until 2023, fans have already spilled theories across social media. After Gunn’s statement, we know that the events of Vol 3 have been planned out for “a long time.” Fans can read this with some comfort.

Over the last few years, there’s been a sense of uncertainty with the Guardians’ story. In 2018, Disney fired James Gunn from the film. He picked up other projects during that time, like DC’s The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. This change of direction caused fans to wonder if the Guardians’ stories would change from the original plan. Now that Gunn is back on the project, fans can expect the same mood of the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films.

Not only will Gunn be working on Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3, but he will also give us some more of their stories in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, a TV special set to release on Disney+ in 2022.  Having James Gunn back behind the wheel for the future of the Guardians’ story adds more stability to the characters. With Gunn’s latest statement on social media, we can be sure that there will be no drastic changes. Peter Quill and the gang may get distracted sometimes, but their story is still set to head in the direction it began.

The Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3 is set to release on May 5, 2023. You can watch the Guardians’ story begin in Vol 1 & 2, both available for streaming now on Disney+. Other upcoming projects from James Gunn include The Suicide Squad (August 5, 2021) and Peacemaker (January 2022).
