Viewers of Disney+’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier got a special treat when they tuned in last week for episode 3, as fan-favorite Emily VanCamp appeared as Sharon Carter. The actress hasn’t been seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the 2016 release of Captain America: Civil War, though her departure was never officially explained. Part of that could be that VanCamp has been busy starring in the Fox hit The Resident, but the studio may have simply been waiting to introduce her back when story dictated.
When last we saw Carter, she was helping Steve Rogers but forced to go on the run when things turned bad. Now, we know where she’s been.
In the The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it’s revealed that Carter has been living in Madripoor, and unable to return to her home in the U.S. And it’s clear, she’s not happy about that.
After all, Rogers travelled back in time with her aunt after kissing her and displaying his feelings, so that had to burn a little.
VanCamp recently spoke with The Wrap about whether she felt betrayed by Rogers’ actions.
“We don’t really address Steve that much. I think it’s important to point out, and I just literally thought about this talking about it all day, is he kissed her,” she said. “I don’t think I’ve ever said that. But that is important to note. I think it’s more anger at the establishment and the government.”
In a separate interview the actress gave with Good Housekeeping, VanCamp was a little more specific about Sharon Carter’s feelings in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
“When we see her now, she’s a little rough around the edges. She’s been on the run, she’s had to take care of herself, she mentions that in Civil War that she has to disappear for a little while, and I think here we get a little sense of what she’s been up to and how she’s had to fend for herself and make her own way in this new world,” she told the magazine. “It’s a very, very different Sharon … You can imagine that there’s a little bitterness there.”
It will be interesting to hear what else Emily VanCamp’s Sharon Carter feels in the weeks ahead.
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson aka The Falcon, Sebastian Stan as James “Bucky” Barnes aka The Winter Soldier, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter, Daniel Brühl as Baron Zemo, Erin Kellyman as Flag Smasher leader Karli Morgenthau, and Wyatt Russell as John Walker, the new Captain America.
The first three episodes of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier are now streaming on Disney+ with new episodes every Friday.
