Matt Reeves returns to direct The Batman sequel starring Robert Pattinson who is also coming back to reprise his role as the Caped Crusader. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mattson Tomlin will be co-writing The Batman 2 along with Reeves. The news comes as Reeves recently signed a first-look deal with Warner Bros. Discovery.

The Batman sequel plot details are still unknown. There are no confirmations about the sequel’s villain though in the closing scenes of the first film, the Joker was teased during a scene inside Arkham Asylum. The Joker (Barry Keoghan), Batman’s arch-nemesis, was talking to The Riddler (Paul Dano) in the next cell. About a few weeks later, Matt Reeves released a deleted scene online featuring an exchange of words between Batman and Joker.

The title is unofficial but it is the follow-up to Robert Pattinson’s version of Batman that proved to pop-culture fans that the Twilight star was worthy of the Batsuit.

It’s not the first time Tomlin and Reeves worked together. Tomlin was involved during some third-act issues in The Batman but he didn’t receive screenwriting credit. That went to Reeves and Peter Craig. For The Batman sequel, Tomlin is coming in from the start. The writing hasn’t started but is expected to in the coming weeks.

Tomlin had a couple writing credits in 2020 and 2021. One was the action-thriller Project Power starring Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon Levitt which was released on Netflix. The other was a sci-fi thriller starring Chloe Grace Moretz titled Mother/Android in 2021 which Tomlin wrote and was also his directorial debut. Tomlin met Reeves on Mother/Android which Reeves produced.

Mattson Tomlin worked on Batman before. He also made his debut in comic books when he wrote Batman: The Imposter, drawn by Andrea Sorrentino, and released in 2021. That experience should help him with The Batman sequel.

Tomlin is currently working on BRZRKR. A Netflix adaptation of the Boom! Studios comic book co-created by Keanu Reeves.

The Batman, which was probably the grittiest and darkest of all the Batman movies, was released on March 4, 2022. It took in a gross amount of $770.8 million in the global box office. Reeves’ involvement in the sequel wasn’t guaranteed and the deal took longer due to the acquisition of WarnerMedia by Discovery last spring.

Now DC fans can rest assured The Batman sequel is in good hands.
