Superman and Lois Adapting to Family Life in CW Show

On Feb. 23, the CW will present its latest television show in the DC Universe when Superman & Lois join what’s known as the Arrowverse.

But this isn’t your grandfather’s story of Superman, the CW’s take will find Superman and Lois, played by Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch, respectively, dealing with domestic life, raising twin boys as they move from Metropolis to Smallville.

According to SYFY WIRE, in the first episode of the show, we’ll see the Man of Steel deal with the challenges of being a husband and father of two teens, Jonathan and Justin Kent, played by Jordan Elsass and Alexander Garfin.

Showrunner Todd Helbing told reporters during a media briefing that included the entire cast, that when developing the show with fellow executive producer Greg Berlanti, the goal was to create a version of Superman that was very different from what’s been presented in the myriad television adaptations that came before.

“We talked a lot about shows like Everwood and Friday Night Lights, and that this would be a family drama with Superman in it,” Helbing said.

Another goal was to separate it from the current crop of CW cape shows, looking to create more of a feature aesthetic with everything from the aspect ratio to the cinematography.

“We’re competing with streamers, and cable nets now with big budgets, so we have to offer the audience an equal in quality,” Helbing added.

What drew Tulloch to the show was the realism that the showrunners had in mind.

“The series makes Lois Lane and Superman relatable because of lost jobs, and parenting their hormonal teenagers. Superman and Lois could be your next-door neighbors,” she said.

So what can we expect from Superman’s kids? Everyone is staying mum for now, but it’s not going to shock anyone if they both start developing some sort of powers. Right now, Jonathan is the successful jock and Jordan is anxiety-ridden and more troubled — but their relationship is grounded in love.

“Even if one doesn’t have powers and the other does, like Lois there will still be a superpower for the other twin,” Elsass said. “And their superpower will be [looking out] for the other twin.”

Superman & Lois debuts with a two-hour premiere event Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 8:00 p.m.
