As the record-breaking Stranger Things show on Netflix heads to its fifth and final season, the series creators Matt and Ross Duffer reveal their plans for a Stranger Things spinoff.
The 80s-themed sci-fi horror show has become such a global phenomenon that Stranger Things 4 is even skyrocketing songs by Metallica and Kate Bush on the music charts. Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush has reached number 1 in the U.K. and top 5 in the U.S.
With the show’s success, the series creators have launched a production company called Upside Down Pictures. On Wednesday, the Duffer Brothers announced they will be making several more projects for Netflix including a Stranger Things spinoff show.
Upside Down Pictures will also develop a live-action Death Note series to the streaming service. The series will be based on the Japanese manga and anime. A series adaptation of Stephen and Peter Straub’s novel, The Talisman is also on the slate.
Stranger Things Spinoff Details
Fans had previously speculated that the Stranger Things spinoff would feature characters like Eleven or even Dustin but the Duffer Brothers said the spinoff is going to be “1000% different.”
“That’s not interesting to me because we’ve done all that,” said the Duffer Brothers during a recent interview on Josh Hororwit’s Happy Sad Confused podcast. “We’ve spent I don’t know how many hours exploring all that.”
“That’s not interesting to me because we’ve done all that,” the Duffer brothers said on Josh Hororwitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast. ” We’ve spent i don’t know how many hours exploring all that.”
That doesn’t necessarily mean the Stranger Things spinoff will stray completely away from its flagship show. The Duffer Brothers said the biggest tie between the main show and the spinoff are the storytelling tones.
“The most important connective tissue I would say is the storytelling sensibility of it,” one of the brothers added. “There is story that connects to the ‘Stranger Things’ world, but it really is more about how we’re telling that story.”
As Stranger Things 5 is being developed, the Duffer Brothers admitted they would be willing to hand over the reins to a new generation for the spinoff show.
“We have other stuff that we want to do and other stories, so hopefully we find that right person to pass the baton to,” they said on the podcast.
Netflix did confirm the Stranger Things spinoff series, the streaming service has not revealed what the series will be about. According to the Duffer Brothers, only Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler, has guessed the idea for the spinoff show.
According to Netflix, Stranger Things 4 has reached over one billion hours of watch time in its first 28 days. The show is Netlflix’s second show to pass the one billion hour mark. The first to hit that mark was Squid Games when it set the record with 1.65 billion hours watched in four weeks.
