Miles Morales isn’t going into the Spider-Verse this time. He’s going across it. In the second official trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, we see Miles heading into one of his biggest battles yet — surviving against other Spider-People. He’ll also face the tough choice of letting someone he loves die or letting a lot of people die. Miles will truly discover what it means to be a hero.
In Into the Spider-Verse, Miles was mentored by Peter B. Parker’s Spider-Man. When he traverses across the multiverse in the sequel, not every Spider-Man will be happy to see Miles. Especially Spider-Man 2099. He even expresses his disappointment with Dr. Strange and Spider-Man from Earth-199999.
First, let’s give a little background story to who is Spider-Man 2099. Just like the previous trailer, the second trailer shows a whole lot of Spider-Folks from across the multiverse including Daniel Kaluuya’s Spider- Punk, Issa Rae’s Spider-Woman and Deadpool’s Karan Soni’s Spider-Man India. The trailer highlights a specific friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, but to Miles, he’s not all that friendly.
Enter Miguel O’Hara aka Spider-Man 2099. As his name indicates, he is from the world of 2099. A dystopian, cyberpunk version of Spider-Man, O’hara headed the genetics program at Alchemax — a powerful corporation which hopes to create a new generation of super humans loyal only to the company.
To make a long story short, Miguel is blackmailed by his boss, Tyler Stone. Miguel winds up rewriting his own DNA to become half man, half spider. Spider-Man 2099 pretty much has Peter’s powers including super-strength, speed and agility. He doesn’t have the Spidey-sense, but he can see in the dark and actually has venomous fangs.
Back to Across the Spider-Verse. The trailer reveals Spider-Man 2099 isn’t all that welcoming to Miles. At one point in the trailer, O’hara tells Miles, “Being Spider-Man is a sacrifice. You have a choice between saving one person or saving every world.” When Miles decides to go a different path, Spider-Man 2099 orders the other Spider-People to stop Miles. There’s even a shot of them fighting.
Spider-Man 2099 appears to be the antagonist in this movie, but maybe if Miles proves his ways are better, Spider-Man 2099 will call off the chase. Fans will have to wait to see Miles’ fate when Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse swings into theaters June 2, 2023.
Here’s the official Across the Spider-Verse synopsis.
