2022 marked the return of the speedy hedgehog in Sonic The Hedgehog 2. The sequel to 2020’s Sonic The Hedgehog, the film continued the adventures of the blue speedster. Having gained a solid box office following, the series will be turning into a trilogy with Sonic The Hedgehog 3. But how much do we know about the film at this time?
The Title: Sonic The Hedgehog 3
Given the naming convention, it’s unlikely that the third Sonic film will stray from the sequel labeling. You can expect the title to remain as Sonic The Hedgehog 3 unless otherwise noted later on when we get a trailer.
The Cast and Crew
Director Jeff Fowler of the previous two Sonic The Hedgehog films will once more return for the third film. As for the cast, you can expect the familiar voices to return to the central characters. This includes Ben Schwartz (Sonic), Colleen O’Shaughnessey (Tails), and Idris Elba (Knuckles). It’s highly likely the human actors James Marsden (Tom), Tika Sumpter (Maddie), and Natasha Rothwell (Maddie’s sister Rachel) will return as well.
But what about Jim Carrey in the role of Doctor Robotnik? Well, we don’t know for sure if he’ll be returning, especially since Carrey has said he’s considering retirement. It’s likely he might make more of a cameo given that Sonic The Hedgehog 3 might favor a new villain.
The Plot
Very little is known about the third Sonic The Hedgehog movie. The most we have to go on is the mid-credit scene from Sonic The Hedgehog 2. In that film, the government reveals they’ve been holding an alien in containment for the longest time. The alien is Shadow the Hedgehog.
Shadow is recognized as a nemesis for Sonic. It’s likely he’ll be the villain of the Sonic The Hedgehog 3 movie. Shadow has not had a voice actor revealed for the role of this CGI character yet.
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Release Date
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 currently has a theatrical release date set for December 20, 2024. It will be interesting to see how this date works for the film as Sonic’s previous films were released in February and April. How will it do as a Christmas release? Well, we’ll just have to wait and see.
