Deadpool 3 just shut down production because of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Since May 2, the Writers Guild of America has been on strike due to failed talks about reaching a new deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Actors and directors have joined the strike in support for the WGA, with some even joining screenwriters on the picket lines.
As of yesterday afternoon, the Screen Actors Guild officially joined WGA by also going on strike. The immediate effects of the strike included the cast of Oppenheimer walking out of their own world premiere as soon as the strike was announced.
Now, Marvel’s Deadpool 3 is the next blockbuster production to hit the brakes now that SAG-AFTRA is officially on strike. Actors part of the film are set to join the strike themselves.
According to Comicbook.com, the SAG-AFTRA strike’s stipulations say actors are not allowed to work in just about any capacity including filming and promoting projects.
“[On Wednesday], our union celebrated the 90th anniversary of the incorporation of Screen Actors Guild,” Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator said during a press conference. “During our nearly century long existence we’ve fought for and achieved countless gains for working actors. Today, we embark on a new important chapter in our unions history. Earlier this morning, the SAG-AFTRA national board convened following four weeks of negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television producers in a meeting, because AMPTP remains unwilling to offer a fair deal on key issues essential to protecting the livelihoods of working actors and performers. SAG AFTRA as national board unanimously voted to issue a strike order against the studios and streamers.”
The breaking news comes just a few days after Deadpool 3 star Ryan Reynolds revealed some images with him and Hugh Jackman wearing the classic Wolverine costume colors from Marvel Comics.
And before the first-look images of frenemies in their super suits, reports confirmed that Jennifer Garner will join the cast of Deadpool 3. Garner will reprise her role as Elektra from Ben Affleck’s Daredevil from 2003.
Deadpool 3 is set to premiere in theaters May 3, 2024, but with the production hitting the pause button, that date may be delayed.
