Peacemaker Season 2 Seems Like A Forgone Conclusion

The DC Extended Universe has a big hit on its hands with Peacemaker starring John Cena, the HBO Max series created by James Gunn has been generating critical buzz and much love from fans since its debut on Jan. 13. So much buzz that a Peacemaker season 2 is inevitable.

Things have been so positive that James Gunn, the creator of the show, recently told Deadline that he has a “lot of confidence” that a second season will be green-lit soon.

“There’s a really good chance of that,” he said. “We’re the biggest show in the world right now.”

Even with competition like The Book of Boba Fett and Attack on Titan, Peacemaker is the show everyone seems to be talking about.

Considering Gunn’s success with the Marvel Cinematic Universe—most notably as director of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, this is a big score for DC as it battles its rival for superhero supremacy. And rumors are already circulating that Gunn will be developing another show for the DCEU, another spinoff connected to the same universe of The Suicide Squad.

It was in Gunn’s 2021 movie that Peacemaker—and his alter ego Christopher Smith—is first introduced on screen.

Peacemaker is a superhero—at least in his own mind—who is taken out of prison to be part of the team put together by Amanda Waller, and quickly butts heads with Bloodsport.

The TV show on HBO Max is set after the events of The Suicide Squad film, and follows Smith/Peacemaker as he joins Project Butterfly, a black ops squad that targets extra-terrestrial parasitic butterfly-like creatures.

“I think at the heart of Peacemaker is a love story between Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks) and Christopher Smith (John Cena) and it’s not a sexual love, not a romantic love, it’s a love of friendship, of two people who are very different from each other, but they have a lot in common,” Gunn told Deadline. “They have overbearing parents who are obsessed with power, and their own version of what success is.”

With all signs pointing to a Season 2, Peacemaker should be able to find many avenues to this success.
