In news that was widely expected, but much appreciated by fans, John Cena’s Peacemaker Season 2 has been announced by HBO Max.
Peacemaker creator James Gunn confirmed the news on his Twitter account, posting, “That’s right, #Peacemaker is coming back for Season Two. Thanks to Peter Safran, @JohnCena, our incredible cast & crew, our wildly supportive & lovely friends at @HBOMax – and mostly all of you for watching!”
Under the tweet, Gunn included a photo of the Peacemaker cast walking tall together with “Season 2” flashing over their images.
The show, which stars former WWE champion John Cena as the boisterous vigilante who first appeared in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, has been one of HBO Max’s biggest hits in years and fan reaction has been almost entirely positive.
Cena weighed in on the renewal as well. “Learning about and eventually becoming #PEACEMAKER was an exercise in exploring the fun and absolutely genius mind of @JamesGunn,” he posted to his social media accounts. “It’s been a privilege to work on this show and with the cast, crew and @hbomax team. Elated to say we’ll be back to create more peace for Season 2.”
As the first original DC show to have its series premiere on HBO Max, Peacemaker is giving the studio a fighting chance against Marvel and its relationship with Disney+. Sequel shows are already rumored to be in the works and Gunn is excited about exploring the world further.
“The brilliance of James Gunn once again shines with Peacemaker,” said Sarah Aubrey, head of original content at HBO Max. “He took this character, brought to life by the inimitable John Cena, and created an exceptional series that’s simultaneously thrilling, hilarious and heartfelt, showcasing the humanity beneath this team of misfits living in a superhuman world.”
All episodes of Peacemaker Season One are now streaming on HBO Max.
