Marvel’s Eternals trailer dropped yesterday and sent fans into more excitement as Marvel Studios phase 4 keeps rolling out Disney+ shows and upcoming films. The trailer gave us a glimpse of the MCU’s immortal beings, but one Marvel hero making his debut on the big screen is not an Eternal. He is Dane Whitman a.k.a. Black Knight. Whitman will be played by someone familiar with swords, knights, and fighting against evil beings. That would be Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington. Though we only got a quick glimpse of Harington in the Eternals trailer, it was still enough to get fans excited. Especially Game of Thrones fans as they will get to see the Stark “brothers” reunited in the next Marvel epic. Richard Madden who played Robb Stark on GoT is playing Ikaris — an Eternal.
Harington’s Possible Black Knight Look
Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see Harington don the Black Knight armor, but that didn’t stop comic book fans familiar with the character from their imaginations running wild. Raf Grassetti, concept artist and God of War art director, posted a concept design from 2019 of Kit Harington as Black Knight in honor of the Eternals trailer release. See image below.
If Kit Harington’s Black Knight design looks close to Grassetti’s concept art, we may be looking at a new pop-culture icon — just like Game of Thrones’ Jon Snow. To add to the excitement, in Marvel Comics, Dane Whitman joins the Avengers. Imagine seeing Kit Harington next to the MCU characters we have come to love like Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen), Sam (Anthony Mackie), Bucky (Sebastian Stan), and right next to them is Harington’s Black Knight. That should get you more excited than seeing Jon Snow and Dani get together.
If you’re missing the romance from WandaVision, we may be getting the MCU’s next “power” couple. In the comics, Dane Whitman and Sersi (not Cersei. GoT joke there.), an Eternal, establish a romantic relationship. In the Eternals trailer, we briefly see Sersi, played by Crazy Rich Asian’s Gemma Chan, standing next to Harington. In another scene in the trailer, we also see Sersi very close to Richard Madden’s Ikaris. Perhaps, in his arms. Will we see a love triangle in the Eternals?
Hopefully, Marvel Studios takes some, or a lot, of inspiration from Raf Grassetti’s Black Knight concept design. It does look pretty cool. See Kit Harington as Dane Whitman when Marvel’s Eternals debuts in theaters November 5th, 2021. Are you excited for the MCU’s next superhero team?
