The 2023 Star Wars Celebration in London revealed three new Star Wars films including one with Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey. All three films will be live-action.
According to AP News, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced the breaking news during the London event. The news is also now on the Star Wars website. The three new Star Wars films will be directed by James Mangold, Dave Filoni and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. They were all brought onstage for the announcement.
Each director will be helming their own standalone Star Wars film. Mangold’s will return to the dawn of the Jedi. Filoni will be about the New Republic that “will close out the interconnected stories told in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and other Disney+ series,” the announcement said. Obaid-Chinoy will focus on the events after The Rise of Skywalker and will feature Daisy Ridley back as Rey “as she builds a new Jedi Order.”
According to Engadget, Ridley’s film will take place 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. This film is supposed to be the final movie in the Skywalker saga. Obaid-Chinoy was a co-director for Saving Face, which won an Academy Award for Best Short Film.
James Mangold’s film will focus on the origins of the Force and the Jedi. It will be set 25,000 years before anything fans have seen from the Star Wars Universe. Mangold directed Logan and the upcoming fifth Indian Jones film.
Dave Filoni finally gets his shot to direct a live-action Star Wars film. Filoni has been the backbone for the extended Star Wars Universe for years with the animated shows and films. He has been deeply involved with more recent projects including The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew. It’s only fitting that he would direct the Star Wars film that will close out these shows.
Disney and Lucasfilm have not set any release dates for the three new Star Wars films. However, Disney’s current slate includes 2025 and 2027 for untitled Star Wars films.
