With a new video game coming up and a couple Netflix series, we’ll be getting a lot more from the Resident Evil universe. The Capcom zombie survival horror game turned live-action film — 6 films to be exact — will be getting another swing at the box office. There hasn’t been a lot of details, but it’s been reported that the new live-action Resident Evil film will take us back to Raccoon City.
Sony Pictures confirmed that the still-untitled upcoming Resident Evil movie will be getting an earlier theatrical release from previously planned. It will now premiere this September 3 in theaters.
It’ll be the first proper big-screen adaption that will involve the infamous Raccoon City since 2016’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. It’ll be some sort of reboot for the long-time running franchise that starred Milla Jovovich as Alice and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson.
47 Meters Down director Johannes Roberts will be taking over directorial duties and will star Kaya Scodelario as Clairee Redfield and Robbie Amell as Chris Redfield. According to SYFY WIRE, the new live-action Resident Evil film will reveal a previously-untold chapter in the horror franchise and will unfold “on a fateful night in Raccoon City in 1998.” Sony says that the new film will serve as an “official origin story of the Resident Evil world.”
With the new film focusing on the Redfield, the new Resident Evil film seems to be shifting away from Anderson’s six films that had Alice as the central character, which was unique to the movies and not the video games. The six movies have generated an overall global box office take of $1.2 billion for Sony.
The new live-action Resident Evil film’s cast will also include Hannah John-Kamen as Jill Valentine, Avan Jogia as Leon Kennedy, Donal Logue as Chief Brian Irons, Tom Hopper as Albert Wesker, Neal McDonough as William Birkin and Lily Gao as Ada Wong. Director Johannes Roberts also wrote the screenplay for the new film and is produced by Robert Kulzer, Hartley Gorenstein and James Harris.
Along with the upcoming new film, Resident Evil Village video game will be released May 7th on Playstation 5, Playstation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and PC. You can pre-order here on Amazon. A couple of Netflix series are also on the way. The CGI animated series titled Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness is set to hit the streaming service this year and a new live-action series from Supernatural executive producer Andrew Dabb is also on its way.
