After a movie does well, audiences are always looking forward to a good sequel. As for the massive success of last year’s National Cinema Day, which brought in more than 8 million moviegoers back into theaters with tickets for only $3, the National Association of Theater Owners is running it back this year.
This year’s National Cinema Day has more than 3,000 theaters participating. The event is inviting audiences to watch movies on Sunday, August 27. Movie tickets will cost $4 this year — a 33% increase from last year — including formats for IMAX and Dolby.
Last year’s National Cinema Day gave audiences the opportunity to watch Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick for only $3 on the big screen, this year audiences will have the chance to watch Barbenheimer (Barbie and Oppenheimer) for a lot less.
There are plenty of movies to watch during this year’s National Cinema Day, but here are five summer blockbuster movies to watch for $4 each.
Barbie
Barbie has been running in theaters for five weeks now and has been a box-office hit. The Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling film has grossed $1.28 billion worldwide so far. It has broken numerous records since premiering on July 21.
Oppenheimer
Director Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight Trilogy / Tenet) brings his latest creation, Oppenheimer, to the big screen. The film tells the story of the atomic bomb through the eyes of its creator, J. Robert Oppenheimer. Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy plays Oppenheimer.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part One
Tom Cruise shows no slowing down after his 2022 box-office hit Top Gun: Maverick. Performing his own stunts, Cruise does it again for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part One. Last year, production footage was released online showing the action star riding a motorcycle off a ramp built on a Norwegian mountain cliff and eventually opening his parachute. He performed the stunt six times.
Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story
A player (Archie Madekwe) wins a series of Nissan-sponsored video game competitions through his gaming skills and becomes a real-life professional race car driver trained by a failed race car driver played by Stranger Things actor David Harbour. AMC Theaters is actually running a promo for people who watch Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story this weekend. They will be entered for a chance to win a Playstation 5.
DC’s Blue Beetle
DC’s latest movie took the number one stop from Barbie. Blue Beetle focuses on the origin story of Jaime Reyes, played by Cobra Kai’s Xolo Maridueña, becoming a superhero. The cast also includes George Lopez, Susan Sarandon, and Bruna Marquezine.
