Though we may get more characters that weren’t shown in the trailer, it’s just impossible to have the entire Mortal Kombat video game roster in the reboot film. Even with the ones that were shown, camera time for each fighter may be a little difficult for director Simon McQuiod. Just ask the Russo brothers (Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame).
According to Comicbook.com, who visited the Mortal Kombat set, McQuoid mentioned that it has a family element to it sharing the big moments with many of the characters that make Mortal Kombat a pop-culture hit. He said that the characters will have their moment to shine.
“So it all feels very, kind of family orientated and sweet at times in there but it doesn’t necessarily mean that’s the spirit of the film,” McQuoid explained. “I think there’s a great humanity and human connection within the film that goes across all the characters. It doesn’t just go across, just not those guys, it’s every character has their sort of moment to shine.”
Mortal Kombat will have an authentic display of martial arts.
Also, the director talks about special effects not being over everything. It shouldn’t take away from the Mortal Kombat characters and the authentic display of martial arts. He wants the audience to have a connection to the characters without the distraction of having too much special effects.
“It doesn’t feel like there’s that veneer of sort of special effects over everything,” said McQuoid. “That for me is the ultimate sort of fantasy of science fiction films is when you really believe. And the way you believe is to make these very authentic scenes and characters and things that have a great heart, and that you really care. So that’s what’s been the most joyous experience for me in bringing this to life is to actually sort of breathe life into these characters.”
After more than 20 years, fans are excited to see a live-action reboot. The Mortal Kombat teaser even became the most viewed red-band trailer of all time. Let’s see if the movie lives up to the hype.
