After the first few episodes of WandaVision, rumors are flying that the show is setting up a House of M storyline for its Multiverse.
Comic enthusiasts know that House of M is a popular 2005 storyline published by Marvel Comics over eight issues, written by Brian Michael Bendis and illustrated by Olivier Coipel, which included a number of crossover tie-in boks.
A not-so-hidden Easter egg in the show’s trailer and subsequent first episode showcased a label on a bottle of wine that translated from French to a reference to the comic title.
According to Comicbook.com, citing a theory posed on the site’s Phase Zero podcast, the events of WandaVision may just be amounting to the first issue of the House of M comic series with most of the story coming later in the MCU movies Spider-Man 3 and Doctor Strange.
That first issue features Charles Xavier bargaining with Wanda Maximoff as she is creating a fake reality for herself. That reality is eerily similar to the life we’re seeing in WandaVision, as her world is showing her living a happy existence with her kids. Professor X sees that the Scarlet Witch is becoming dangerous and realizes he is losing an ability to stop her from making this imagined reality a new reality for the entire universe.
In the series, Wanda utilizes her powers to consume everyone into a new reality, resulting in dead characters being brought back to life, living characters altered and many losing their memories. The bulk of the story is trying to restore what Wanda has set in motion.
The podcast noted that it wouldn’t be too surprising to see someone in Wanda’s world try to tell her this life isn’t real.
“Maybe that’s Monica, maybe that’s somebody else,” noted Brandon Davis, host of the podcast. “We know it leads into Spider-Man 3 and it leads into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So, I’m about to put the tinfoil hat on. I’m about to go deep cut details here. I think that this could end with Wanda, essentially, losing control of her powers, everything becomes this alternate reality. With the cliffhanger is what happened to that reality.”
That would certainly explain some of the movies and TV shows coming from Marvel, such as Black Widow and Eternals, where characters may be a bit different than Marvel fans expect.
