Sony and Marvel Studios upcoming third Spider-Man movie just got a little bit more magical and strange. The Hollywood Reporter announced Benedict Cumberbatch will be putting the cloak of levitation back on and joining Tom Holland. The report also said the Master of the Mystic Arts will be filling in the mentor role just as Robert Downey, Jr. did for Spider-Man: Homecoming as did Samuel L. Jackson did for Spider-Man: Far From Home. Spidey and Strange first met on that donut-shaped spacecraft in Avengers: Infinity War.
This amazing news gives the untitled Spider-Man 3 movie some more star power. Jamie Foxx is already on board to reprise his Electro role from Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which featured Andrew Garfield as the web slinging teen. And now, Benedict Cumberbatch adds jet fuel to this movie.
A Spider-verse coming soon?
Fans are very keen to this type of news. It only fuels the speculations of a Spider-verse being introduced for this third Spidey film. We already know that WandaVision is introducing alternate realities and the multiverse to the MCU. And the Dr. Strange sequel is titled Dr. Strange In The Multiverse of Madness. But the Electro news is one of the biggest hint to an alternate reality since he’s from Garfield’s Spidey universe.
Also, in Sony’s Morbius with Jared Leto, we get a glimpse of Michael Keaton at the end of the trailer. Keaton played Adrian Toomes aka the Vulture in Holland’s Homecoming. Also, if you pay close enough attention to the trailer, you’ll see a Spider-Man poster on a wall, but it’s the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man.
Peter Parker’s world is about to get crazier.
The teen’s past few years have been quite adventurous. How many teenagers can say they’ve been to a purple dude’s home world far into outer space? And he already has to deal with Jameson exposing his identity. With Electro and the possibility of a multiverse, Peter’s world is about to get blown up even more. If all these speculations about alternate realities and multiverses are going to happen, then perhaps will get to see a Spidey team-up with Holland, Garfield, and Maguire. Hopefully, Miles Morales will be able to swing by.
Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Tony Revolori and Jacob Batalon are all expected to return. Filming starts later this October in Atlanta. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness also begins shooting this month.
Sony has Spider-Man 3 (which isn’t the official title) scheduled to debut December 17, 2021. A lot of 2021 films are now being pushed to 2022 or later due to COVID-19 uncertainties. Hopefully, this release date for Spidey 3 sticks.
