Since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox a little over a year ago, Marvel fans have been anticipating the future of the X-Men live-action films. The franchise is inevitably going to reboot, but there are a lot questions left floating around. Deadline caught up with Marvel Studios Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige about when we can expect some mutant action.
He was asked if the upcoming WandaVision Disney+ series, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Captain Marvel 2 will lead to an X-Men reboot, Feige replied:
“In hindsight, in five years if when we’re talking about everything that’s happened, everything can be a ramp to everything, specifically though, yes, Monica in Captain Marvel 2 and specifically to Wanda teaming up with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.”
That sounded like Feige danced around the question so he doesn’t give away any clear details, but with the multiverse plot being such a major factor in the MCU’s Phase 4, crossovers are ramping up for Marvel Studios.
A hint to an X-Men crossover could be Even Peters casting in WandaVision. If Peters is reprising his Quicksilver role, that can be the first step to bringing mutants to the MCU. Maybe Wanda ends up creating a reality where she pulls Evan Peter’s Quicksilver rather than Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Avengers: Age of Ultron version. In doing that, it can give Marvel Studios an easier transition to bringing back fan favorites like Hugh Jackman as Wolverine or just recasting all-together.
“It’ll be a while. It’s all just beginning and the five-year plan that we’ve been working on, we were working on before any of that was set,” Feige said about the X-Men when speaking with io9 at the Avengers: Endgame premiere in 2019. “So really it’s much more, for us, less about specifics of when and where [the X-Men will appear] right now and more just the comfort factor and how nice it is that they’re home. That they’re all back. But it will be a very long time.”
Five years seems like a long time. Perhaps as more Phase 4 MCU films and shows premiere, we’ll get more X-Men teases starting with WandaVision which premieres this Friday, Jan. 15th with two episodes.
