During filming last fall for the highly anticipated sequel to Marvel’s Black Panther, star Letitia Wright suffered a serious injury on set and filming was forced to shut down production.
Thankfully, as of mid-January, the cameras in the United Kingdom were once again rolling for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, as Wright recovered and was ready for action, according to reports coming out of the BBC.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Wright plays Shuri, the sister of King T’Challa, who is rumored to have a much more prominent role in the new film, following the tragic death of Black Panther star, Chadwick Boseman in 2019.
That seems probable, considering that when production halted, it was implied that they had shot all they could without Wright available and needed her to resume. Considering they hadn’t been filming too long, it stands to reason that fans will be seeing a lot of her character and learn more of Shuri’s story in this film.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Marvel producer Nate Moore spoke about the pressure of the movie with the loss of Boseman and how the studio needed to figure out narratively the best way to continue Marvel’s Black Panther franchise.
“So beyond, ‘Hey, we want to make a big, fun time,’ and people of the first movie, it’s how do we sort of do right by his legacy and tell a story that isn’t exploitative, which we would never, ever do, but builds on the things that he loved about the property and builds on the things that he brought to the property in a way that is enjoyable, feels real, feels earned, feels organic,” he said during the interview. “Because I think we’re going to see the movie in two lenses, pure entertainment, but also cathartic. And we have to be conscious of both of those lenses as we’re making it.”
Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is scheduled to debut November 11, 2022. The film is directed by Ryan Coogler and stars Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, and Dominique Thorne.
