Lady Gaga confirmed on social media that she’ll be joining the cast of Joker 2. The sequel is officially titled Joker: Folie à Deux. She’ll star opposite Joaquin Phoenix who will be reprising his Joker role after winning an Oscar for best actor. The teaser is set to “Cheek to Cheek.” A song Lady Gaga covered alongside Tony Bennett. Lady Gaga is expected to play Harley Quinn in the DC movie.
It’s been reported by Variety back in June that Lady Gaga would be playing Harley Quinn for the upcoming Joker 2 movie but hasn’t been confirmed until now. On June 7th, director Todd Phillips posted the screenplay’s cover on Instagram revealing the “Folie à Deux” subtitle. It refers to a shared delusional disorder. Joker and Harley Quinn’s relationship is one of the most complex and twisted love affairs in comics. The Joker is abusive and manipulative to Harley but also shows genuine affection towards her. The Harley Quinn character was first created for the “Batman: The Animated Series” in the early 1990s.
This won’t be the first live-action version of Harley Quinn. Margot Robbie has played Harley three DC movies. She played the role in 2016’s Suicide Squad, 2020’s Birds of Prey, and 2021’s The Suicide Squad. Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco voices Harley for the popular HBO Max animated series Harley Quinn. As for the Joker, there’s been multiple live-action variations of the character. More recently, Jared Leto played Joker in Suicide Squad and reprised the role for Zack Synder’s Justice League. Eternals’ Barry Keoghan made an appearance as Joker in Robert Pattinson’s The Batman. One month after its theatrical release, The Batman director Matt Reeves released a deleted scene between the Joker and Batman.
2019’s Joker film became a box office hit grossing just over $1 billion worldwide making it the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history. The Joker movie won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and earned 11 Academy Award nominations including best picture and director. Joaquin Phoenix won the Oscar along with Hildur Guðnadóttir for best original score.
Joker: Folie à Deux will also be a musical. Perhaps, it will be filled with Lady Gaga’s hit songs. The Joker and Harley Quinn will be hanging on the “Edge of Glory” or mayhem when Joker 2 premieres in theaters on October 10, 2024. Check out the announcement teaser below.
