HBO finally dropped the House of the Dragon official trailer. The newer and longer preview to the Game of Thrones prequel series reveals the start of the Targaryen civil war. The trailer also shows more dragons and more blonde hair. In case you were wondering, this is the newest trailer by HBO. It’s different from the teaser trailer that was released back in May.
House of the Dragon, which centers on the Targaryens 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, brings GOT fans back to Westeros. It’s pretty nice to revisit the world we last saw in the that dreadful day in 2019 during the Game of Thrones series finale. The House of the Dragon official trailer gives a fresh look at King’s Landing with a completely new cast of characters. The dragons look pretty good. Hopefully the CGI will look good when the show premieres.
Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi is back and bringing his Westworld style of epic instrumental covers of songs. The House of the Dragon official trailer features Djawadi’s orchestral cover of “Venus In Furs” by Velvet Underground. Epic, instrumental covers of songs seems to be something trending these days. Just ask Kate Bush and her new-found success when the Duffer Brothers used “Running Up That Hill” in their hit show, Stranger Things.
One character says in the House of the Dragon official trailer, “Knives will come out,” then cuts to Prince Daemon (Matt Smith) with a knife at his throat. Another character declares, “War is afoot,” with a scene of two groups readying for battle. “Your family has dragons,” says a voiceover as a shot of a scorched field is shown. We see a few shots of dragons flying and at the very end, a close-up of one of the Targaryen’s dragon.
House of the Dragon’s other major character is Emma D’Arcy who plays Smith’s royal rival Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. The trailer apparently reveals the civil war will start because of these two. The prequel is set immediately before the war between competing heirs in House Targaryen. The series is based on a novella found in George R.R. Martin’s 2018 novel, Fire & Blood.
House of the Dragon premieres August 21 on HBO and streaming on HBO Max. You can watch the full House of the Dragon official trailer below.
