After almost 10 years, audiences will finally get Man of Steel 2 with Henry Cavill returning as Superman. The sequel is currently looking for a writer.
Warner Bros. recent merger with Discovery and David Zaslav, who now serves as Chief Executive Officer and President for the studio, may be giving the DCEU a new light. The future of DC Films was filled with uncertainty but now fans are seeing some hope. In the last several years, there have been a few standouts in DC’s catalog including Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel starring Henry Cavill as Superman.
2013’s Man of Steel kicked off the DCEU, but never received a sequel. However, that’s about to change. According to The Hollywood Reporter, DC is developing a Man of Steel 2 with Cavill set to return. Warner Bros. Discovery, as the studio is now called, is currently in the process of looking for a writer.
This breaking news is part of a larger DC piece of the franchise’s future. Longtime DC producer Charles Rover is on the project and apparently, the studio has some directors in mind. According to THR, Mission Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie is on that list. That’s who we know for now. McQuarrie has worked with Cavill on Mission Impossible: Fallout. The director is currently hard at working finishing the last two Mission Impossible films — Dead Reckoning Part One and Two. Man of Steel 2 is in the the very early stages of development so perhaps McQuarrie will be able to take the helm. He’s already proven he can handle a big-budget action blockbuster starring one if not the biggest star in Hollywood right now.
Even with the mixed reviews of Man of Steel from fans and critics, it is still considered as a top 10 comic book movie of all time. The Snyder film was right for the time as it asked, what if Superman landed in our real world? How would people actually respond to an indestructible being with super powers that can wipe us out if it wanted to? It was more of a “grounded” story so to speak. Fans still believe Henry Cavill was made for the part and his performance as Superman alone made Man of Steel “the most complex character studies found in any modern superhero blockbuster.” With all the countless delays, cancelations, and conflicting reports, this might be the best news DC fans could ask for.
Though nothing is set in stone, this is a breath of fresh air for Superman fans. It’s nice to know the ball for a Man of Steel sequel has started rolling. It sounds like Cavill’s Superman is going to be a major cog in the DC machine under Zaslav.
The next DC film in the DCEU is Black Adam starring Dwayne Johnson. The actor has been teasing a potential fight between his character and Superman ever since San Diego Comic-Con this past summer.
No premiere date has been set for Man of Steel 2 starring Henry Cavill. Black Adam hits theaters this Friday, October 21st.
