Hawkeye Episode 4 picks up from the moment we last left Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) and Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld). They were looking for evidence of Jack’s (Tony Dalton) involvement with the tracksuit mafia at Kate’s mother’s penthouse. The mission is cut short when Jack confronts Clint with the Ronin sword.
Hawkeye and Kate Bishop Are Confronted by Eleanor and Jack
Kate and her mother, Eleanor (Vera Farmiga), come into the room where Jack has a sword at Clint’s throat. Eleanor asks why there’s an Avenger in her living room. Jack is also stunned to realize he is confronting the Hawkeye in episode 4.
The four of them sit down at the dinner table to discuss their case. Kate fills Eleanor and Jack in on their mission and mentions Clint is her partner. Clint low-key denies this claim, even when Kate tries to restate their partnership as a friendship.
Eleanor looks at her phone and discovers her work email had an attempted break-in. She suspects either Kate or Clint knows who it was. Kate tries to cover up her attempt at getting her mother’s email.
Jack thanks Clint for all his work with the Avengers. Eleanor, however, pushes Kate to tell the truth about what’s going on. Kate finally admits that she had to break into her email for crucial info.
Eleanor finds herself more accepting of her daughter’s actions when Clint mentions Kate is helping with a case. Eleanor, having more faith in Hawkeye, trusts his words.
At that moment, Clint notices Jack’s sword in a corner. Kate tries to end the meeting but Eleanor still wants to speak with Kate. She does, however, lead Clint out of her penthouse.
While Eleanor rings the elevator for Clint, she takes a moment to speak with Clint privately. She states that Kate is not a superhero. Clint finds himself relating to her words.
Eleanor Gives Clint A Subtle Warning
In Hawkeye episode 4, Eleanor then brings up Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow. She does so to highlight how even superheroes can die in the line of duty. The elevator arrives but Eleanor still wants to talk.
She corners Clint by asking if he has kids. She assumes he does based on his non-verbal response. Eleanor then brings up how she fears for her daughter’s safety.
While Clint boards the elevator, Eleanor asks if Clint will kick Kate off the case. Clint says he can’t do that but promises to keep Kate safe. An unsure Eleanor watches as the elevator door closes.
Now alone in the elevator, Clint takes out his phone and texts his wife Laura. He asks her to look up Sloan LTD, the company name they found in Eleanor’s security database. He puts his phone away, awaiting her response.
Meanwhile, Eleanor is making a phone call. She sounds distressed and isn’t sure what to say. She only says that it’s urgent and that they should call her back.
On the streets of New York, Clint takes a call from Laura for the info he requested. Laura, at home with the kids, brings up mafia dealings. Clint deduces its the Tracksuit mafia.
Laura then says their boss is Jack Duquesne, a CEO doing money laundering. Surprised at this info, Laura asks if he still needs to be in New York City. Clint says yes and stresses how Kate needs his help.
Laura, intrigued, asks Clint if anything else went missing from the Avengers compound. To make sure her kids don’t hear, she asks in German. Clint asks if she’s referring to a Rolex, believing it was destroyed years ago.
Laura thought so too but, then again, the Ronin suit was thought to be destroyed as well. Clint thinks this is worth looking into and tells Laura to try to locate a transmitter. She then asks if Clint’s tired.
Clint says he’s a bit winded but doing okay. She tells him to take it easy and he says he will. They end the call by saying they love each other.
Hawkeye episode 4 continues back at Eleanor’s penthouse. Kate sits in the living room with her one-eyed dog, Eleanor, and Jack. Jack goes to get something to drink. With Jack out of the room, Kate tries to speak about Jack but Eleanor declines this conversation.
Eleanor then shifts the conversation to Kate helping out with the company Christmas party. Jack then enters the room intrigued. He stresses how he’s looking forward to dancing and Kate says she doesn’t dance.
Jack proves her wrong by getting Eleanor on her feet. They share a romantic dance over Christmas music. Kate finds herself surprised at how much her mother is in love.
Eleanor says it’s been quite the day with both a superhero visit and a serenade. Jack adds to the conversation “Life is short, you never know what you’re going to get.” Kate and Eleanor both laugh at yet another aphorism he gets wrong.
Jack finds himself smiling but perplexed. Eleanor then brings up how he once said “absence makes the heart grow older.” He says that’s a true statement and Eleanor simply laughs again.
Clint and Kate Have A Christmas Movie Marathon
Back at the apartment in Hawkeye episode 4 where Clint is staying, he grabs some frozen packages from the freezer. He places them on his body to treat his muscles. He’s about to relax in a recliner when Kate buzzes to be let inside.
Kate enters in a Santa hat with gifts and her one-eyed dog. She says the boxes are for holiday cheer and shows off the Christmas movies for the movie marathon. Clint smiles at her thoughtfulness.
Clint, however, would prefer to talk about Jack. He brings up the info he found about him and how he’s the CEO of a money-laundering company for the Tracksuit mafia. Kate is initially shocked but still stresses they’ll have a holiday celebration while forming a plan
The two of them make drinks and put on ugly sweaters while talking strategy. Kate lays out the specifics of what they need to figure. When she turns to Clint to finish the rest of the plan, he stresses he’s terrible at planning.
While watching Christmas movies, Kate asks how they’re going to get more trick arrows for their bows. Clint says there are no more available. He has trick arrowheads but no suitable arrows.
Kate then asks if Clint ever had boomerang arrows. Clint asks why she’d ask about something so stupid and she says it’d be handy because the arrows would come back. Clint laughs at her logic.
With arrows seemingly out of the question, Kate asks Clint if he has any other combat techniques. While decorating a Christmas tree, Clint mentions he can hit something from far away with a mere coin. Kate doubts him until he uses a coin to turn off the TV from several feet away.
Clint Reflects on the loss of Natasha
After more drinks, Clint tries to teach Kate the coin trick. He gives her some tips and she starts getting better. Eventually, she masters turning on the television with a coin.
Feeling more like a party, Kate asks Clint some questions she’s always wanted to ask him. She asks him what’s the best shot he ever took. He answers rather quickly with “the one I didn’t take.”
Kate asks him to elaborate but he refuses. Kate continues to beg him for an answer. A stern Clint says he’d rather not tell the story.
Now that he’s thinking about it, however, Clint slowly reveals the story. He mentions a mission where he had to take someone out. When he got to his target, however, he couldn’t take the shot.
He had a feeling his target just wanted out. Kate, sympathetic, asks if it’s Natasha he’s talking about. Clint says yes and brings up how she was the best hero there ever was.
Kate apologizes and Clint says it’s okay. He brings up how superheroes always face danger. He hold back his tears as he watches It’s a Wonderful Life on television.
Kate Realizes Clint is the Ronin
Kate then brings up how Clint lost his family during the Thanos snap. He brings up how there were no words for his loss. Kate also asks if that’s also where he met the Ronin.
A silent Clint doesn’t answer her question. She figures out that Clint has always been Ronin. Trying to find an answer for his actions, Clint stresses that everyone handled the “Blip” (Thanos snap) in their own way.
He coldly states he was continuing what he was trained to do. Kate refuses, emotionally stressing that Clint was a hero. A brooding Clint tries to tell her he was a weapon meant to hurt people.
“I was aimed by the right people at the right targets,” Clint says with little emotion. Kate tries to make the case that those days are behind him. Clint refuses, stating the past is still tied to him and his family.
This is why Clint states his reason for staying in New York and not being able to go home yet. He thanks Kate for the Christmas party. He then tells Kate to get some rest as they have a big day tomorrow, ending the party on a somber note.
Clint turns off the lights, lies back in his chair, and takes out his hearing aid. His memories drift to the moments during Avengers: Endgame. He thinks of his kids, Ronin, and Natasha’s final words.
The next day, Clint awakens with coffee for Kate. He lays out his plans for meeting with their contact Kazi. He then tells Kate to meet up with the LARPers he met for finding more trick arrows.
Clint brings up how his tracer arrow settled at an NYPD facility and that the LARPers would know about it. Kate thinks he’s joking but Clint tries to make the case that they’re a colorful group. Kate, however, would prefer if Clint refer to the trick arrows as THEIR arrows and he agrees.
Kate takes her dog for a walk in the park to visit the LARPers. She brings her bow and arrows and approaches the LARPers. Kate brings up how she’s here on official business from Clint as his “partner-slash-best-friend.”
She asks which one of them is a cop. Officer Wendy Conrad says is the cop in the group. Her LARP name, however, is Els-Bath of Deepdale.
Kate mentions that their needs are “casual, run-of-the-mill evidence tampering.” She states they need to reacquire Hawkeye’s arrows from an NYPD facility. Wendy says she can help her out if she can make it worth their wild.
While Kate agrees, Clint ambushes Kazi in his car at a lot. Having disarmed Kazi of his hidden gun, Clint comes to him with a proposition. He knows that Maya Lopez has Kazi under his finger but that he knows more about the criminal businesses in terms of who is running the show.
Clint brings up how Maya has a problem with obsessing too much over Ronin. When Kazi asks just what Clint wants, he says he doesn’t want anyone to die. If Maya keeps being driven by revenge, more people will die.
Kazi tries to go for his knife in the overhead mirror. Clint, however, already removed it. He also mentions he took the box-cutter from underneath the seat.
Clint stresses that Maya is chasing a ghost but that she wouldn’t listen to his words. He says Kazi may be the only one who can convince her. Clint leaves, taking the gun with him.
Back at Kate’s apartment, Clint returns to find the LARPers and Kate. A costumed Kate asks how Clint’s day went. Clint says it was fine and asks Kate if they have their gear yet.
Kate assures him that they’re on the way. Clint is confused. Before he can question further, Kate brings up how good she looks in the Viking costume one of the LARPers is fitting her for.
One of the LARPers brings up a deal that can be struck. The LAPERers will get the gear and Clint will get them the materials for a new costume. Kate says that can be done well, bringing up how Clint himself could use a new costume as well.
An agitated Clint stresses he’s on a mission and doesn’t have time for a play. One of the LARPers stresses their guild. Just then, Clint gets a text from Laura.
Laura messages that the Rolex was not destroyed at the Avengers compound. The transmitter is still active. The location is 3715 Godfrey Road.
Clint says he has to go but is then cornered by Wendy. Wendy says she’s developed an arrow-retrieving machine. Clint awkwardly thanks her and tries to convince her that he can have the bag for the device, despite the bag being Wendy’s wife’s.
Night falls and Clint and Kate are staking out 3715 Godfrey Road (an apartment complex) on a roof. Kate says their stakeout would be cooler if they were on a higher rooftop. Clint then stresses that it’s better to make a quick exit than a quick entrance for safety.
Clint, viewing the facility through binoculars, goes over the plan. He tells Kate it should take him out about three minutes and that she should warn him as a lookout. When he removed the binoculars, however, Kate is gone.
Kate is already on the ground and heading to the facility. Over the earpiece, Clint berates Kate for her cocky attitude. Reluctantly, Clint stresses his plan but Kate has a different plan.
She finds a way to get into the facility by helping an old man inside with his groceries. Clint tells her not to do this but she tells him to pipe down as he boards the elevator with the old man. She also tells the old man she’s helping that she’s currently talking to an Avenger in her ear.
The old man finds herself not trusting Kate, taking his groceries back from her as he gets off the elevator on his floor. Kate then proceeds to her floor.
She arrives at the door and picks the lock. Kate enters the room to find nobody in the darkness. She notices two strobe lights, however, and fires two trick arrows of goo at them to stop the lights.
Clint asks what that’s all about and she doesn’t know. He then instructs her to find a watch. He also stresses that if the watch is found by the mafia that their covers could be blown.
Kate finds the watch and prepares to leave until she finds something else that catches her eye. There’s a notebook on the desk with Clint’s information. The information is specifically on his family.
Kate Bishop Fights Maya
Clint tells her to get out of there now. He just realized the strobe lights were for a silent alarm meant for those who can’t hear. Clint knows now that Kate has broken into Maya Lopez’s (Alaqua Cox) apartment.
Clint says he’s coming to help but Kate only hears him getting into a fight with someone. Maya then comes up from behind Kate and attacks her. A fight breaks out in her apartment as Kate stresses that Maya is there with her.
Clint, currently engaged in a fight as well, says that he is also fighting Maya, though she is masked. There’s confusion but Kate asks for a little help. Clint finds a moment during his own fight to fire a zipline arrow towards Kate’s location.
Clint continues fighting Maya while Kate uses her bow on the zipline. She’s only able to slide down halfway, however, and is stuck in the middle. She dangles above the street that separates the two buildings.
Eventually, Kate is able to swing towards Clint’s location, landing on her back. The masked Maya on the roof cocks a gun and prepares to fire it at Kate. Clint steps in front of Kate, intending to shield her from the gunfire.
The Maya from inside the apartment zips over across the line and kicks the masked attacker. The fight continues but with the heroes trading enemies. Clint is able to subdue Maya briefly.
Florence Pugh Returns As Yelena Belova in Hawkeye Episode 4
The masked attacker, however, throws Kate off the roof. Clint rushes to the edge of the roof and finds Kate dangling off the zipline. She yells at him to pull her up.
Clint, still haunted by losing Natasha on a cliff, cuts the zipline and tells Kate to get out of there. She slips down some Christmas lights but isn’t giving up yet. She runs back to the roof where Clint is now fighting Maya and the masked attacker.
Maya takes aim with one of the trick arrows and fires. The electric blast sends everyone flying back a few feet. The audio drops as all of the deaf characters rise back to their feet.
Maya then attacks Kate. Kate fires an arrow into her arm. When Kate threatens Maya with another arrow, Maya flees.
Clint continues to fight with the masked attacker and he eventually removes her mask. Before he can see who the attacker is, Clint is stunned by her wrist weapon that shoots a disabling blast at him. Kate then takes aim at the unmasked attacker.
The attacker is revealed to be Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) in Hawkeye episode 4, the sister of Natasha Romanoff. Kate is unsure what to make of this assassin. Yelena takes this time to escape off the roof with a grappling line.
Kate then asks Clint who that person was. Clint says she doesn’t want to know and that Kate isn’t his partner. He brings up that the attacker was a Black Widow assassin and that this case just got more dangerous.
Realizing there’s too much at stake, Clint says he’s continuing the mission alone. Kate pleads with him to reconsider but Clint won’t hear it, telling her to go home. A bitter Kate leaves the roof as Clint contemplates how to handle the mounting threat looming over him and his family.
