Harrison Ford is always up for a good adventure, and the actor has proven he’s proud of his iconic movie characters Indiana Jones and Han Solo by returning to both franchises for later-day sequels.
Now, Ford has decided he’s willing to don Indiana Jones’ famous fedora one more time, agreeing to star in what’s being called the “final film” of the franchise.
Lucasfilm made the announcement at Disney Investor Day on Dec. 10, drawing lots of cheers from onlookers.
According to Comicbook.com, Lucasfilm’s presentation was filled to the brim with Star Wars news and also had the surprising info on the new Willow TV series for Disney+, but it was the announcement about Ford’s return that garnered the most applause.
James Mangold, who directed Ford v Ferrari, will take the reins as director for Indy’s swan song, and it promises to be an ending worthy of the billion-dollar character.
A tweet by Lucasfilm revealed the film is already in pre-production and the final journey of Indiana Jones will hit theaters in July of 2022.
Producer Frank Marshall recently spoke to Den of Geek about how a new installment of the Indiana Jones franchise couldn’t be done without Ford returning, knowing that fans would have a hard time accepting someone else in the iconic role.
“Yeah, we are working on the script,” Marshall said. “There will only be one Indiana Jones and that’s Harrison Ford. What I’m excited about with Jim is a great story. I think you see that in his movies like Ford Vs Ferrari. It’s all about characters and telling a good story. So, I’m excited to see what he comes up with. I haven’t seen (the script) yet so I don’t know what to tell you.”
Ford last stepped back into the role in the 2008 film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, following the original 1984 Raiders of the Lost Arc, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
