The Godzilla vs. Kong trailer is loaded with action, but eagle-eye viewers may have noticed the real “big bad” of the film.
While the legendary battle between the King of the Monsters and Skull Island’s protector seems to be in motion, the MonsterVerse version of Mechagodzilla may be far deadlier than anything the two titular monsters have faced in the franchise before.
Rumors first started that Mechagodzilla would be involved in the film when an action figure of the monster was leaked early last year as part of an early promotional push for Godzilla vs. Kong.
Originally brought to life in the 1974 film, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, the villainous monster was created to bring a worthy adversary for Godzilla and was inspired by the popular robot anime and manga genre.
In that original film, Mechagodzilla was engineered by the Simians, a race of alien invaders who wanted a big weapon to destroy the earth. The monster could launch missiles and fire energy beams staright out of its eyes and chest.
Additionally, Mechagodzilla was equipped with a layer of fake flesh, so it could pretend to be the real Godzilla. The battle vs. Godzilla at the end was one of the iconic monster’s most formidable fights, and nearly saw Mechagodzilla come out at top.
Rumor has it that MonsterVerse will rely on all of these attributes for the upcoming film and that explains why the trailer shows Godzilla cutting a swath of destruction across the globe. It also explains the glowing eyes that come from “Godzilla” in the trailer.
However, this version is expected to steer away from the original origins and rely on the backstory from the Heisei era Mechagodzilla, where the creature was built by the United Nations Godzilla Countermeasures Center, and not aliens.
Other intel from the trailer suggest that Ren Serizawa, a character believed to be the son of the late Monarch scientist Ishirō Serizawa, involved with Mechagodzilla’s creation in some way.
Godzilla vs. Kong is scheduled to be released on March 26.
