New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. released the first full trailer for the live-action Mortal Kombat movie reboot and so far it’s a flawless victory. It features popular characters like Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Jax, Kano and Raiden. This time, the studios opted for an R-rating to stay true to the blood and gore of the video game, which the film is based on. What better way to tease that, but to release a red band trailer.
Over the past couple months, New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. have released teasers, images by Entertainment Weekly and character posters. So this isn’t really the first look at the characters, but it is the first time to see them in their proper and extended look at them being in action. We can’t wait for the actual fights when the movie is released.
Not only did the trailer show familiar characters and their special abilities, but it teased a bit of the movie’s story. From what we saw, it seems to be an original story rebooting the Mortal Kombat film franchise. We also got a glimpse of the fatalities — brutal finishing moves by the characters who won the match in the video game.
We’re used to seeing Liu Kang play the protagonist in the past films, but this time a new and original character named Cole Young (Lewis Tan) will take that role. He’s an MMA fighter being hunted down by Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung and Sub-Zero — his best warrior.
Mortal Kombat movie synopsis below:
“Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with,” the official synopsis reads. “Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana — the immense power from within his soul — in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?”
Mortal Kombat is directed by Simon McQuiod and produced by Todd Garner and James Wan (The Conjuring films and Aquaman). The story is by Greg Russo, Oren Uziel and Dave Callaham. Russo and Callaham wrote the screenplay.
The film debuts in theaters and HBO Max on April 16th. So set your reminders and get ready for Mortal Kombat. For now, check out the character posters here.
