Warning: The Falcon and The Winter Soldier Spoilers Ahead
The Marvel TV series premiered on Disney+ in March of 2021, and one of the infamous characters who joined the Falcon and Winter series was Helmut Zemo. Like a true villain, his actions left fans scratching their heads, but we’ve got some answers!
As fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe know, Zemo, played by Daniel Bruhl, previously appeared in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, and fought against Steve Rogers, and the Avengers. While Helmut Zemo didn’t possess any superpowers of his own, he still managed to cause plenty of havoc to the good guys. The villain even managed to divide the Avengers!
In the film, Zemo had an army of winter soldiers available to him, only to kill them all rather than unleash them on the Avengers. According to CBR.com, there was a method behind his madness.
While his plan may have looked complicated at first, it seemed to make a lot of sense. Zemo started by going through the Hydra files released online by Black Widow in Captain America: The Winter Soldier to find an old Hydra operative who had the means to control the Winter Soldier.
Thanks to Bucky’s knowledge of the Winter Soldier program, Zemo’s plan was to use the book to locate a facility where other winter soldiers were kept cryogenically frozen, at the ready to be turned into a murderous army. But when several of the Avengers arrived to stop him, they learned Zemo had killed them all.
The truth was, Zemo really wanted a videotape that proved it was Bucky who had killed Tony Stark’s parents, a revelation that eventually led to the fight between Iron Man and Captain America.
Breaking up the Avengers was his true motive. After all, he lost his entire family during Avengers: Age of Ultron, while the superheroes battled Ultron. Helmut developed a vendetta against all super-powered beings and ended the lives of the Winter Soldiers to make sure they would never be woken and used again.
It’s almost certain Zemo will be up to his evil ways when The Falcon and the Winter Soldier begins. The series premieres March 19 on Disney+.
