Ewan McGregor took home his first-ever Emmy Award on Sunday for his starring role in the Netflix drama, Halston. However, it was his discussion of his upcoming show that created the biggest buzz at the awards ceremony. The actor, who plays Obi-Wan Kenobi in the upcoming Disney+ series baring the character’s name, promised it “would not disappoint.”
Those are big words when describing any Star Wars project, but McGregor noted fans will enjoy what the new series has in store.
“We finished shooting our series, and it was really, really good fun. I really enjoyed working with [director-executive producer] Deborah Chow, and I think it will not disappoint,” he told reporters backstage. “The new technology that we employed doing it is cool, and it was a different experience than making the original three films that I did.”
He’s referring to The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith.
Obi-Wan Kenobi will premiere on Disney+ in 2022. It will mark the first time that Ewan McGregor has stepped back in the role of Jedi master since 2005.
The series takes place a decade after Revenge of the Sith, with Kenobi in exile on Tatooine to protect Luke Skywalker — one of the newborn twins of fallen Jedi Anakin Skywalker.
“He has this one task left, which is to keep Luke safe,” McGregor told reporters during Disney Investor Day 2020.
The show will find Obi-Wan on a rollicking adventure across the galaxy far, far away before having what Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy called the “rematch of the century” with Darth Vader.
The series will reunite McGregor with his two-time Star Wars prequels co-star Hayden Christensen (Darth Vader) in what is expected to an iconic battle of the ages.
“We couldn’t tell the story of Obi-Wan Kenobi without addressing Anakin or Vader,” Chow said in a sizzle reel screened at Investor Day.
And based on Ewan McGregor’s excitement for the show, 2022 can’t come fast enough for Star Wars fans.
