Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has gone on record as saying viewers should be able to watch Doctor Strange 2 film, which is officially titled Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, without having seen the hit Disney+ show, WandaVision. But Elizabeth Olsen, who plays the titular star of the show that just earned 23 Emmy noms, believes fans would enjoy it more if they knew about the events of the show, and that the plot of the show is integral.
“Without WandaVision, Doctor Strange wouldn’t make sense,” she told TheWrap. “I do feel like it fully leads into where we find her. It feels totally connected to the series.”
Olsen is set to return as Wanda Maximoff alongside star Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme in Doctor Strange 2, directed by Sam Raimi.
There were lots of important storylines in WandaVision, and the finale found Olsen’s character fully realize her identity as the Scarlet Witch. In fact, during the post-credits scene, we see Wanda living in a remote cabin somewhere near the mountains, and while it appears that she’s just relaxing, when she goes to pour herself some tea, the camera continues zooming to the backroom of the cabin, where we see Wanda in her astral form.
In that, the Scarlet Witch is perusing the Darkhold — the “book of the damned” who, according to Agatha (Kathryn Hahn), has an entire chapter about the Scarlet Witch.
That ties directly into Doctor Strange 2 as the Darkhold is something that Doctor Strange and his fellow sorcerers would be very interested in retrieving, if only to keep it out of the wrong hands.
Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to be released on March 25, 2022. So, there’s still plenty of time for MCU fans who haven’t watched WandaVision to catch up. As Emmy voters know, they certainly won’t be disappointed.
