Disney Plus Day revealed upcoming franchise projects across its entire brand including a sizzle reel for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series.
Darth Vader and Obi Wan Kenobi had one of—if not the best-ever—lightsaber battles in Star Wars history, and it looks like history is about to repeat itself to the delight of Star Wars fans everywhere.
It’s been widely hinted that the two legendary Jedi will do battle on the upcoming Disney Plus series, Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Though not much information has been shared about the show, other than the events of the show will follow the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and that Ewan McGregor will be back in the title role, and Hayden Christensen will once again play Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, new information has been slowly leaking out on fan accounts, social media, and now from Disney Plus Day.
Disney+ has confirmed that Obi-Wan Kenobi will be launched sometime in 2022, following the upcoming third season of The Mandalorian and the first season of its highly-anticipated spinoff show, The Book of Boba Fett—both scheduled for this December.
Deadline recently reported that McGregor and the show’s executive producer, Deborah Chow, teased some tidbits during Disney Plus Day, though no firm release date was discussed.
Furthermore, a Disney Plus Day sizzle reel that was provided to the press ahead of the day didn’t show any new clips from the upcoming series, though it did reveal some concept drawings and a brief behind-the-scenes bit of Christensen training with a saber.
“Have another swing at each other, might be quite satisfying for everybody,” McGregor teased.
The Disney Plus Day sizzle reel also featured McGregor and Chow talking about the desire by fans to see the character return to the screen.
“There’s a hunger for this character to come back,” said McGregor about his protagonist. “The fans have been waiting long enough, ya know?”
Chow added, “This is a quite a dark time we’re coming into with him, just being a Jedi; it’s not safe. There are Jedi hunters out there.”
One shot did show the twin baby siblings Luke and Leia that appeared at the end of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, to which McGregor commented. “At least he has this one task left, which is to keep Luke safe.”
According to the EP, that was considered a good starting place for Obi-Wan Kenobi’s story and it will be interesting to see where it goes from there.
