Creature Feature Love and Monsters Offers Sneak Peek at NY Comic-Con

The eagerly-awaited creature feature film, Love and Monsters, will be making its digital and premium on demand debut on Oct. 16. To whet fans’ appetite early, the cast and director Michael Matthews took part in a virtual panel at this year’s New York Comic-Con, offering a sneak peek at some of the movie’s amazing visual effects.

Love and Monsters stars Dylan O’Brien (Maze Runner), Jessica Henwick and Michael Rooker (The Walking Dead), living in a post-apocalyptic world where small creepy-crawly creatures have morphed into giants and taken over the Earth, forcing humans to live in small fortified communities in fear of these giant bugs and reptiles.

The story is set seven years after the Monsterpocalypse, and follows Joel Dawson (O’Brien), who has been living underground ever since giant creatures took control of the land. He reconnects with his high school girlfriend Aimee (Jessica Henwick) on the radio, and sets out on an 80-mile quest to rekindle the love—unconcerned by the monsters in his wake. Along the way he meets a laid-back Crocodile Dundee-style hunter (Rooker) and his dog.

“This guy decides to travel, like, 85 miles from his bunker to the ocean to find the love of his life,” Rooker explained during the panel. “He has to travel through this godforsaken wasteland with monsters that can jump up and nip off your head at any second!”

According to SyFy Wire, the film’s director talked about how the story examines the lengths people will go to find true love.

“The human spirit kind of comes through in a way,” Matthews said during the panel. “There’s, like, an honesty with people wanting to connect.

He also previewed that the production design by Dan Hennah, an Oscar winner for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, is the ideal balance of “monsters that will scare audiences— without venturing into hopelessly dystopian territory.”
