Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is now available but is already experiencing server issues. Call of Duty is one of the biggest game franchises in the world and when it a new game of this magnitude launches, it’s an international pop-culture event.
This time, it’s not just any updated version of the Call of Duty. It harkens back to the brand that is harmonious to what made the franchise great. It shares the name of the game that dates back to the early days of Xbox Live and Playstation Network (PSN). COD fans have been awaiting the sequel to the most successful game in the series, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The amount of gamers trying to load in early today would certainly result in some server problems.
That being said, the anticipation for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 may be backfiring on Infinity Ward’s face. Yes, it will be temporary. Once the game went live worldwide at 12AM ET on October 28th, Modern Warfare 2 was hit with server issues and various errors about players needing to purchase the game amongst other problems.
Given the size of Call of Duty gamers, these issues are to be expected. As noted by Charlieintel, “the game has over 200,000 concurrent players on Steam alone.” It’s also note-worthy that Infinity Ward release the campaign a week early, which means there’s very few players splitting their time between campaign and multiplayer as this time. Meaning, there’s probably thousands of COD players flooding the servers.
Folks turned to social media as they reported issues like players being disconnected while trying to load into multiplayer and others put in very long queues. Though the queues were said to be relatively short wait times. Players started to compare the issues to the recent launch of Overwatch 2 which prevented players from logging in or staying logged in. The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 server issues aren’t quite as severe as the Overwatch 2 issues, but its enough for players to experience a variety of problems while trying to log in.
Similarly, players are reporting that skins and other digital in-game items from the game’s Vault Edition are not appearing in their inventory. Infinity Ward hasn’t given a statement on how long these issues will take to be fixed, but surely these matters will be resolved sooner than later.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is out now on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, and PC.
