International box office reports Marvel’s Eternals hitting $7.6 million in several international markets on opening day.
Eternals — which stars Gemma Chan (Crazy Rich Asians), Richard Madden (Game of Thrones), Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley), Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, and Angelina Jolie — debuts in North America today and most major theaters on Friday. According to Variety, through its opening weekend, Eternals is predicted to generate $75 million to $80 million in the United States and Canada and another $55 million internationally.
Based off Rotten Tomatoes scoring, Eternals is the first MCU film to score below 60%, but even with the mediocre reviews, it doesn’t appear to be slowing down. The Marvel Cinematic Universe only keeps getting stronger. The latest superhero team had its strongest start in Korea with $2.6 million, followed by France with $1.6 million, Italy with $700,000, and Taiwan with $600,000. Disney is projecting that Marvel’s Eternals is pacing 85% ahead of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which opened to $56 million at the global box office.
On the other hand, Eternals limited international release may effect its global box office performance. Like two other Marvel movies that released in theaters this year, Eternals as no release date in China where comic book properties usually do well. It has also been reported that it will not play in the Middle East due to its inclusion of certain adult situations and gay superheroes. However, having a theatrical-only release should help its box office revenues continue to go up.
Asides from the early Wednesday release in some countries, Disney reported Eternals is generating solid numbers in Mexico and Brazil. In the next few days, Marvel Studios epic film of cosmic heroes will hit countries such as Australia, Croatia, Greece, and other international locations.
Marvel’s Eternals is directed by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland). Along with the actors mentioned above, Kit Harington (another Game of Thrones star) will play Dane Whitman who becomes the Black Knight in Marvel Comics.
Eternals opens everywhere November 5th with early showings today. It’s safe to say the Marvel film will remain strong in the box office regardless of its mixed reviews.
