DC’s Blue Beetle film is sitting comfortably with an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That score may go up or down in the next few hours but at least it’s showing that this film has potential. It’s may be a win for the new DC Studios under James Gunn and could pave the way for other upcoming films in the DCU.
This film will be Blue Beetle’s first time on the big screen and will be the first DC character of the DCU. The lesser known DC character will carry the studio’s commitment to capturing a larger audience.
Blue Beetle’s fresh Rotten Tomatoes score is a good sign for the newly formed studio under James Gunn and Peter Safran. DC needed a fresh start after suffering bad reviews over and over for its films including Black Adam, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and The Flash.
DC’s Blue Beetle has a $120 million budget, which made it relatively affordable and was initially planned to be distributed for streaming on Max. If it proves to be successful at the box office, it may start a new age of DC Universe films with a lower budget focusing on lesser known characters from DC Comics.
Blue Beetle’s positive reviews might influence DC Studios’ creative approach. If the film continues to connect with viewers, DC could develop additional stories with similar vibes that lead to more seamless films in the DCU. Something that has also been missing from past DC films.
Blue Beetle’s young star, Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) is receiving praise which will significantly boost his career and popularity. Maridueña remarkable acting adds to the film’s appeal. It sets him apart from the growing list of superhero actors.
The Blue Beetle movie also stars Adriana Barraza as Jaime’s grandmother, Nana; Damian Alcázar as his father, Alberto; Elpidia Carrillo as his mother, Bianca; Belissa Escobedo as his sister, Milagro; George Lopez as his Uncle Rudy; and Bruna Marquezine as Jenny Kord. Raoul Max Trujillo plays the film’s villain Carapax, the indestructible man. Harvey Guillén as Dr. Sanchez, and Susan Sarandon as Victoria Kord.
DC’s official synopsis of Blue Beetle reads: “After Jaime Reyes graduates from college and returns to his hometown Palmera City, he is chosen to become a symbiotic host to the Scarab, an ancient alien biotechnological relic that grants him a powerful exoskeleton armor, turning him into the superhero Blue Beetle.”
DC’s Blue Beetle movie premieres in theaters August 18th with early screenings Thursday night, August 17th.
