Another delayed film due to COVID-19 uncertainties is the Shazam! spinoff, Black Adam. But instead of getting a further release date, according to Comicbook.com, Warner Brothers decided to remove the Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson film off their schedule entirely. With so much uncertainty as to when the country will get control of the coronavirus, setting a release date even for 2021 seems a little over-optimistic.
December 22, 2021 was the original release date for Black Adam, but the studio now has the film listed as “undated”. Studio executives will make the decision when to release the film at a later date. A 2022 debut seems more likely.
Earlier this fall, Johnson played a large part at DC’s virtual event DC FanDome giving some details about the movie and presenting a motion comic promo drawn by DC artist Jim Lee. He said that Black Adam will “change the hierarchy of power” in the DC universe. Johnson then had a virtual conversation with Noah Centineo who will be playing JSA’s Atom Smasher.
Black Adam producer Hiram Garcia said to Variety, “The journey we’re going to put Black Adam on, it’s very compelling — what he’s gone through and what you’re going to see on-screen is going to be amazing to watch play out, and then when you couple that with how powerful every character is who is going to be in the universe, it’s really going to heat things up,” said Garcia. “We have a lot of fun saying that the hierarchy of the power in the DC Universe is going to change because when Black Adam arrives, everyone needs to watch out because he’s going to change the game.”
Black Adam will also show the history of the DCEU world established by Zack Snyder (Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Justice League) and its superheroes. The big announcement at DC FanDome was that the JSA (Justice Society of America) will appear in this film.
“Our entire production team and our amazing director, Jaume Collet-Serra, we all have unified, giant ambitions for what we want to do with these characters and the JSA and all those new members we’re introducing from Hawkman to Atom Smasher to Cyclone and Doctor Fate,” Garcia elaborated. “It’s an opportunity to put ourselves in the DC Universe, and really start to create a fun group of characters that audiences haven’t had the chance to see, but that a lot of them are familiar with.”
Garcia said filming starts sometime in the first quarter of next year with hopes that precautions are in place to slow the spread of COVID-19. Black Adam follows other delayed DC films like its counterpart, Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
